BREA, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's basketball program celebrated its 2017-18 season last week at the Yardhouse in Brea.
The team showed great improvements during last season, finishing with a record of 8-21 to double its win total from two seasons ago in the first year under Head Coach Jeff Harada and the new coaching staff.
Daeja Smith was named the Most Valuable Player after leading the team in points per game with 12.5 on 51 percent shooting from the field which ranked fifth in the Big West Conference. Smith also led the team in rebounds per game with 9.3, ranking third in the conference.
After her impressive season, Smith now has 808 career points and finished just shy of 600 rebounds with 597. Smith is just the 17th player in the history of the program to reach such numbers.
Point guard Jade Vega was given the Titan Award which is given to the student-athlete that most represents a Titan on and off the court. Vega led the team with 3.8 assists per game and was third on the team with 10.7 points per game.
Freshman Carolyn Gill was named Defensive Player of the Year after having a strong first year, showing her defensive intensity with 1.5 steals per game to led the Titans and rank 10th in the conference. Gill was also second on the team in blocks with 0.5 per game.
Fellow freshman Ashlee Ane was given the Academic Excellence award for her dedication on and off the court in the classroom. Ane, Gill, Emily Chan, Lauren Fruto, Lauren Nubla and Mia Gallo all received Big West Academic Awards.
