Smith Takes Home Big West Player of the Week

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Junior Daeja Smith had a fantastic week leading Fullerton to a pair of wins over UTSA and Utah Valley this past week. For the week, she averaged 17 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2.5 blocks per game. It is the first Player of the Week award of her career and the first time a Titan has won the award since Dec. 5, 2016.

Against UTSA, Smith put up 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. It was her fifth double-double of the season and fourth in five games. Eight of her 12 points came in the fourth quarter and were a crucial part of Fullerton finishing out the victory. Smith's game against Utah Valley was the best of her career. She finished the game with a career-high 22 points on 10-11 (90.9%) shooting from the field. She completed her sixth double-double of the season by pulling down 12 rebounds for the game and was a force to be reckoned with on the defensive end, finishing with a career-high 5 blocks. The 6-3 center now has eight straight double-figure scoring games and six double-doubles in her last eight games.

Her 22-point performance was the first time a Titan posted a 20+ scoring game this season and she surpassed 600 points for her career because of it. Along with that milestone, her five blocks gave her 89 total blocks for her career, moving her into second all-time in program history.

Smith and the Titans will play one more game before the New Year as the Miners of UTEP come to Titan Gym for a game on Dec. 29 at 7pm PT.
