Smith Scores Career High but Titans Fall Short at Denver

DENVER – Redshirt junior center Daeja Smith scored a career-high 15 points, but the Cal State Fullerton women's basketball team could not recover from a tough second quarter of play as the Titans suffered a 77-58 loss to Denver at Magness Arena on Tuesday night.

Smith came off the bench to score a team-leading 15 points, making 9-of-10 from the free-throw line while adding five rebounds and two assists.

Also scoring in double figures for Fullerton (0-4) was junior guard Jordan Jackson with 10 points as she knocked down two three-pointers, delivered one assist and totaled a career-best three steals. Iman Lathan and China Henderson had five rebounds apiece for the Titans.

Denver's (2-2) Jacqlyn Poss scored a game-high 19 points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds as she shot 7-of-13 from the floor.

Briana Johnson poured in 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor and delivered three assists for the Pioneers, while Lauren Loven scored 15 points shooting 5-of-10 form behind the arc. Ciera Morgan dished out a game-high eight assists.

Denver held just a slight 13-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but the Pioneers outscored Fullerton 27-13 in the second quarter, creating a 16-point, 40-24, halftime deficit for the Titans. In that second quarter, the Pioneers shot 9-of-16 from the floor including 5-of-9 from long distance.

Fullerton shot 45.2 percent (19-of-42) from the floor for the game, barely outpaced by Denver's .484 shooting percentage (30-of-62). The Titans were sent to the free-throw line on 24 occasions, converting 17.

Denver's significant advantage came on the glass as the Pioneers outrebounded Fullerton 33-24 with 14 boards on the offensive glass leading to a 15-2 advantage in second-chance points. In addition, Denver delivered 15 assists to CSF's six.

The Titans also turned the ball over on 21 occasions leading to 23 points for Denver.

Cal State Fullerton returns to Titan Gym next week for a three-game homestand beginning 7 p.m., Monday, hosting Whittier College. The Titans will then welcome Montana at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 30, in a doubleheader with the men's team, before ending the week with a 4 p.m., tip against Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Notes: Cal State Fullerton opens the season 0-4 for the first time since 2005-06…this is Denver's first win against Fullerton in three all-time meetings…Daeja Smith's 15 points and nine free throws made set two new career highs for the junior.
