Titans Fall In Opening Round of SMU Thanksgiving Tournament

DALLAS, Tex. – Senior Karima Gabriel had a season-high 21 points and had two three-pointers in the Titans fourth straight loss, dropping their first game of the SMU Thanksgiving Classic to SMU 53-74 at Moody Coliseum on Friday afternoon.

Cal State Fullerton (2-4) freshman Dani Craig recorded her fourth double-digit game, posting 13 points while remaining flawless from the free throw line, while Michelle Berry chipped in nine rebounds.

The Titans fell early in the first period, allowing a seven-point run before Gabriel hit her first three-pointer of the year to put the Titans within five.

Throughout the first period, the Titans struggled to keep up with the Mustangs, ending the first period trailing SMU 18-7. Turnovers plagued the Titans as they recorded ten turnovers in the first half.

Gabriel ended the first period leading the Titans with five points while Jade Vega chipped in two.

To start the second quarter, the Titans surrendered another layup to the Mustangs' Alicia Froling to extend the SMU lead to 13.

Craig hit her first three-pointer of the game in the second period to close the gap to ten before Gabriel made two free throws to put the Titans within eight.

With just under four minutes left in the first half, Gabriel hit double-digits with a layup to close the gap to five.

Yet after the timeout, SMU scored back-to-back buckets to extend their lead back to nine until Craig hit her second three-pointer of the game to keep the Titans in the game.

At the end of the first half, the Titans trailed 24-33. Gabriel and Craig led the Titans with 10 points a piece, while the trio of Gabriel, Amanda Tivenius and Berry each logged four rebounds a piece.

In the third period, the Titans came out refreshed and went on a 15-5 run to take the lead at 39-38.

Gabriel chipped in nine of the 15 points to lead the Titans offensively, while the Titans shot much better in the second half shooting 33%. The Titans ended the third quarter trailing by four, 47-43.

Craig started off the fourth quarter with her third three-pointer of the game. The Mustangs answered back and broke away with two jump shots to put the score at 51-46.

The Mustangs ran away with the game, going on a 9-5 run and leading the Titans 56-48 at the final media timeout with 4:47 left on the clock.

The Titans couldn't stop SMU in the final minutes, outscoring the Titans 27-10 in the fourth quarter to beat the Titans 74-53.

The Titans will play the loser of the Kansas and Northern Illinois game in the consolation match tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. PST.

 

NOTES: Gabriel had her third double-digit game this season, her first 20-point game… The Titans shot a season-high 85.7% from the free throw line… The Titans shot a season-low 27.8% and also a season low 22.7% from behind the arc… The Titans set a season-high with 22 turnovers tonight…
