Scouting the Matadors

Cal State Northridge enters the contest with a 13-14 overall record (9-4 Big West) and is currently tied for first with Cal Poly, but the Matadors own the tiebreaker after sweeping the series against the Mustangs. The Matadors have won six of their last eight games.

The Matadors boast three players averaging double-figures in points Ashlee Guay (16.2 ppg), Cinnamon Lister (15.2 ppg), and Janae Sharpe (11.9 ppg). Camille Mahlkneckt has chipped in this season with 7.7 ppg and a team-high 7.6 rpg.

CSUN averages 67.9 points per game, while it surrenders 67.8 per contest. The Matadors are shooting 39.3 percent from the field and 31.4 percent from behind the arc.

Assessing the 49ers

Long Beach State (15-11, 7-5 Big West) comes into this weekends matchup just one game ahead the Titans in the Big West standings. The 49ers have won their past seven of seven conference games.

The 49ers are led by freshman guard and former Big West player of the week Raven Benton, as she averages 12.9 points per game. She also leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 5.5 boards per contest. Lauren Spargo and Alex Sanchez also help the 49ers out as they average 10.7 and 10.4 points per contest, respectively.

LBSU averages 71.2 points per game and leads the league in steals per game (10.0 spg). The 49ers were picked to finish fourth in the conference in the Big West's preseason conference poll.

Conference Call

The Titans are 200-302 (.399) all-time against Big West Conference foes. Fullerton was 7-14 last season against league foes and won two games in the conference tournament before losing to Pacific in the semifinals.

Last Time Out for the Titans

Cal State Fullerton shot just 19-of-56 from the field and 4-for-21 from behind the arc, as UC Santa Barbara defeated the Titans 64-54 Saturday night at Titan Gym.

For Fullerton (10-15, 6-6 Big West, the loss keeps them in fifth place in the conference race and one game behind Long Beach State for fourth place. With the win, UC Santa Barbara improves to 8-17 overall and 3-9 in conference play as it looks for a postseason berth.

Senior guard Alex Thomas led the way for the Titans, pouring in a career high 29 points on 10-of-25 shooting, as she records her 13th consecutive double figure scoring game. Junior guard Chante Miles also added 14 points, but was haunted by foul trouble for most of the game.

UCSB had three players score double figures as senior guard Nicole Nesbit scored 19 points and collected six rebounds. Junior forward Clair Watkins had a big presence inside for the Gauchos as she notched a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds, while senior Melissa Zornig chipped in 18 points.

The Gauchos jumped out to a 9-0 lead before the Titans could blink as Fullerton opened the game 1-for-10 from the field in the first eight minutes (Thomas three-pointer). The Titans failed to find a rhythm offensively in the opening half, as they connected on just 7-of-26 first half field goal attempts, as well as a 2-for-11 start from three.

However, with Thomas the Titans hung in there and with 7:21 remaining a basket by Samantha Logan cut the deficit to six, 18-11. Fullerton even pulled within one in the first half, but UCSB answered back and headed into intermission up 28-22.

The Titans were never able to make a good run for majority of the second half as Fullerton was never able to get closer than eight points and trailed by as many as 19. In the final two minutes of the game CSF was able to produce some steals and turnovers to cut the lead down, but by then the Titans had run out of time. Tonight marked just the fifth time this season where Fullerton has failed to have a lead at any point in a game.

Last Time Against CSUN & LBSU

The Titans face Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State for the second time this season and the first time the Mustangs and Titans clashed it was Ashlee Guay who led all scorers with 26 points for a 76-54 CSUN win. Against LBSU, Fullerton led by as many as 14 points in the first half, but LBSU went on a 24-2 run to end the half and the continued its hot shooting in the second half in the to take an 83-64 victory at Titan Gym.
