Own Goal Decisive in Titans' Latest 1-Goal Loss

The No. 20 UC Irvine men's soccer team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, Wednesday night in Big West Conference action at Anteater Stadium.

The `Eaters (9-1-6, 2-1-4) got on the board in the 4th minute as junior Irving Garcia crossed the ball from the left side into the box where it was kicked into the net by a Fullerton defender. UCI went up 2-0 in the 24th minute as sophomore Spencer Thompson took a pass from senior Matt Murphy on the left side of the field and blasted it in from just outside the box.

The Titans (4-13-1, 1-6-1) were awarded a penalty kick in the 37th minute and it was converted by freshman Michael Denny to cut the lead to 2-1.

Freshman keeper Andrew Fontein had two saves in the match for the `Eaters. Freshman keeper Trevor Whiddon had eight saves for the Titans.

The Anteaters had 18 shots in the match while the Titans had 10.

The Anteaters will next go on the road Saturday as they travel to Santa Barbara to take on No. 15 UC Santa Barbara at 7:00 p.m. at Anteater Stadium. Fullerton is idle until next Wednesday night's home finale vs. Cal State Northridge.
