Coronado Strikes Pay Dirt in 100th Minute to Give Titans 1-0 Victory

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – For the fourth time in six games the Titans went into extra time, however, this time Fullerton ended the game before double overtime on a spectacular free kick from Robert Coronado from 30 yards out to give the Titans a 1-0 victory on the road Thursday night against San Diego.

Fullerton won a free kick in the 100th minute just before the end of the first overtime on a foul by the Toreros about 15 yards outside the 18-yard box. With time running down senior captain, Coronado, stepped up in a pressure situation to score a highlight reel goal.

"I just took a deep breath and told myself to hit on target," Coronado said.

With the win, Fullerton moves to 2-1-3 on the season after picking up a victory on the road against a strong non conference opponent. The Titans finish off their three-game road trip going 2-0-1.

The Titans out-played the Toreros throughout much of the match, controlling a majority of the possession while out-shooting San Diego 19 to 12. Last season the Titans went 2-0 when recording 16 or more shots in a match.

Ross McPhie, Samuel Goni and Zico Bailey led the team with three shots each while Bass Sarr, Christian Pinzon, Edward Salazar and Coronado had two shots apiece. Salazar had a great chance in the 28th minute to give the Titans a lead but hit a shot just off the crossbar.

For the second consecutive game Fullerton's defense and goalkeeper Paul-Andre Guerin recorded a clean sheet. With the shutout, Guerin now has 10 for his career, needing just one more to move into a tie for 8th all-time in the history of the program. Guerin's 10 shutouts is the most of any active goalkeeper in the Big West Conference.

"The team played great, probably one of the best games we've played," Coronado said. "We still need to work on finishing and being clinical in front of the goal but overall, we all fought together and for each other."

The Titans now return home looking to continue their winning streak as they host Cornell at 5 p.m. at Titan Stadium.
