OC Register Story

FULLERTON, Calif. -- The Orange County Register's Mirin Fader sat down and talked with Cal State Fullerton men's soccer player Alex Heilmann about his amazing transition from defender to forward and how the senior has provided a huge spark for the Titan attack this season.

Below is an excerpt from the story.

Some Cal State Fullerton teammates laughed at first at the thought.

Alex Heilmann, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior center back, who has played defense nearly all of his prep and college career, was going to play forward?

But once Heilmann scored two game-winners in the spring, and now, having scored seven goals as the Titans' (5-6 overall, 1-1 Big West) top scorer, there was no more laughing.

Heilmann knows how to put the ball in the back of the net.

"It's really fun. I'm trying to take it all in at once," Heilmann said. "Whether I score a goal or I don't, the way I'm looking at it, with this being my last year, I just want the team to win. I'm just trying to help the best way I can."

The La Habra native moved to the position out of necessity, as Fullerton had numerous departing seniors and numerous experienced veterans securing the back. Why not try Heilmann on offense?
