Men’s Soccer Alumni Enjoying Success

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton men's soccer program has been well represented this year at the professional level in a variety of venues beyond college soccer in the United States and around the world. Multiple Titan alumni are still enjoying success on the pitch and below are updates on their accomplishments this season.

Bobby Reiss (Pictured right)

Former Titan Bobby Reiss (2009-12) has enjoyed a lot of success in the North American Soccer League (NASL). During the 2014 spring season, Reiss has made four appearances as a starting defender leading the Silverbacks to a 2-2-0 record. Last year, Reiss helped the Silverbacks clinch the 2013 NASL spring championship as he scored a goal in the 73rd minute to seal the title for Atlanta. He ended the season scoring goals in the final two matches and was named to the NASL's Team of the Week twice during the season. During his time at Fullerton, Reiss started every match during his last two seasons (39 starts) and was named to the All-Big West Conference Academic team in 2011 and 2012.

Duncan Oughton

After playing professionally for 10 seasons for Columbus Crew of the Major League Soccer, Duncan Oughton (1997-2000) is now in his fourth year on the sidelines. Oughton is currently in his first season as assistant coach for Toronto FC after spending the past three years as an assistant for the Crew. Currently, Toronto FC stands in seventh place with a 3-4 mark and is two points away from fifth place  in the eastern conference with majority of the season remaining (top five teams advance to MLS playoffs). Over the course of his playing career, Oughton was part of five major trophies won by the club and was the 10th overall pick by Columbus in the 2001 MLS Superdraft. He spent his entire professional career wearing black and gold, appearing in 136 matches, logging over 9,000 minutes, while scoring three goals and recording 13 assists. Oughton also was part of the New Zealand National team and appeared on New Zealand's FIFA Confederations Cup squad in 2003 and 2009.

Gabriel Farfan

A 2007 graduate of Cal State Fullerton, Gabriel Farfan is currently playing for the Chiapas Futbol Club in Mexico's Liga MX on loan from Chivas USA. A native of San Diego, Farfan made 14 appearances and 10 starts for Chivas USA before being loaned to the Chiapas for three appearances as a defender. During his short time with the team, Farfan helped the Jaguars finish the 2013-14 season 6-5-6, but the squad came up just short of advancing to the Liga MX playoffs due to goal differential.

Shay Spitz

After playing for the Los Angeles Blues and Kitchee, a soccer club in Honk Kong, over the last couple years, Shay Spitz is now a midfielder for the Richmond Kickers of the USL Pro league. The Sydney, Australia native has appeared in four games this season recording three points off one goal and one assist, while helping the Kickers achieve a record of 2-1-3. Spitz appeared in 77 matches as a Titan scoring 12 goals in his career.

Michael Farfan

Michael Farfan, the twin brother of Gabriel, is also playing professionally in Liga MX. Farfan was drafted in the 2011 MLS Superdraft by the Philadelphia Union and after three seasons with the Union, he was loaned to Cruz Azul. In Philadelphia, Farfan amassed a total of 83 matches, nine assists and four goals as the main attacking midfielder. Farfan helped Cruz Azul grab the top spot in the league with an 11-3-3 record and scored a goal in his first appearance with the team. After reaching the quarterfinals, Cruz Azul was eliminated from the postseason after losing the leg to Leon.

Kevin Venegas

Kevin Venegas (2008-11) is currently playing for Minnesota United FC of the NASL league. Venegas was recently named to the NASL Team of the Week for his impressive defensive performance and offensive attacking against FC Edmonton last week. Venegas, who scored his first professional goal in 2012, has scored once this season in four appearances for the Loons. The Norwalk, Calif., native was originally drafted in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft by Chivas USA.
