After six weeks of voting, 16 Play of the Year candidates were whittled down to just one and former Cal State Fullerton men's soccer standout Kevin Venegas emerged victorious, as his long-range strike for the Minnesota Stars was selected by NASL.com voters as the league's Play of the Year.

Venegas' curling score to the far post from about 25 yards out against the Carolina Railhawks in his league debut on May 12 beat out teammate Martin Nunez for the title, earning 67 percent of the vote to 33 percent for Nunez in the final round of voting. Venegas finished the NASL regular season with a goal and an assist while taking 23 shots for the Stars, who reached the NASL Championship Series before falling in a shootout.
