Nipomo, Calif. - Mark Anguiano shot a 2-under-par 69 and his Cal State Fullerton teammates were almost as good as the Titans opened a 4-shot lead Sunday after the first round of the Firestone Invitational hosted by Cal Poly SLO at Monarch Dunes Golf Club.

The Titans' score of 4-over-284 bested runnerup Seattle (288), UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge (both at 293).

Preston Valder of UCLA, competing as an individual, had the best score of the day at 65. Anguiano and Chris Russo of CSUN came in next at 69. Fullerton's Ryan Tetrault and John San Juan carded 71s to tie for sixth along with Corey Gard, competing as an individual. Scott Rubzin had a 73 and Dakota Duerr shot 74.

Play continues Monday with the final 36 holes.
