Nipomo, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton is challenging host Cal Poly for a tournament championship in the Titans' first men's golf competition in more than two decades.

With 18 holes to play Tuesday in the Firestone Grill Invitational in Nipomo, the Titans trail the Mustangs by 8 strokes, 580 to 588, and the second-place Holy Names University by only 2 strokes. Fullerton held a one-stroke lead after the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event. Cal Baptist is in fourth place at 589 and Cal State Bakersfield is in fifth place at 593.

John San Juan has the best score by a Titan at 71-74=145 with Nick Ellis two strokes back at 74-73=147. Close behind are Jake Golembiewski (73-76=149), Scott Rubzin (76-75=151) and Dakota Duerr (72-80=152).
