LA QUINTA, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton men's golf took second place at the 2023 Big West Championship at La Quinta Country Club on Tuesday after shooting 10-under par 854.
Russell Howlett ended the final round in a three-way tie for first place out of 45 participants. He shot a 5-under par 211 (70-73-68). A sudden-death birdie by Long Beach State's Ian Gilligan crowned Howlett a 2023 Individual Tri-Champion.
As a team, the Titans were two strokes away from Long Beach State, who finished first with a score of 12-under par 852.
Harry Doig completed the tournament in seventh place after shooting a 2-under par 214. He shot a tournament-best 67 in the first round before shooting a 74 in the second and 73 in the final round.
Garrett Boe was right behind Doig, tied for eighth place with Cal Poly and UC Davis golfers. Boe shot a 1-under par 215 (73-71-71).
Matthew Schafer ended the championship's final round tied for 22nd place after shooting a
5-over par 221. He became more efficient with each round, starting the tournament with 77 and 75 strokes and finishing with 69.
Trevor McNary made up the fifth spot on the Titans team, golfing himself into a shared 26th place after golfing a 7-over par 223 (71-80-72).
The Titans complete their season with six top-three finishes and two first-place finishes.
