Titans in 20th After Day One at Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic

LAHAINA, Hawaii – Cal State Fullerton finished its first day of competition Friday at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic hosted by the University of Hawaii.

The Titans posted a 19-over 303 on Friday and sit in 20th at the stacked 24-team event. Eight teams at the event are ranked in the top-50 in GolfStat's rankings. Only two teams shot a collective round under par, led by South Carolina with a 2-under 282. LSU sits in second with a 1-under 283 with Georgia and Clemson tied for third with an even-par 284. North Florida and UC Santa Barbara round out the top five with a 3-over 287.

The Titans traveled six golfers to Hawaii and Ty Stites led them all with a 2-over 73 in the first 18 holes. He currently sits tied for 34th overall in the massive 132 player field. He started the day off with a birdie on the first hole he played at the 185-yard par-3 No. 8. A pair of bogeys and a double bogey set him back but he tallied another birdie on his second-to-last hole of the day to wrap up his day.

Sophomore Matt Wilson and junior Mark Cobey each finished with a 5-over 76 and both sit in a tie for 75th place. Michael Sharkey rounded out the team scoring with a 7-over 78 and is tied for 93rd. Matt Murphy was the fifth Titans team golfer and recorded a 9-over 80 on day one.

Jack Ireland competed in his third straight tournament for the Titans as an individual and recorded a 7-over 78 to finish tied for 93rd on the day.

As a team, the Titans finished near the top in par 5 scoring, posting a collective 4.67 stroke average on those holes with a collective 5-under, which was the fifth best in the field on Friday. The Titans also carded 53 pars on the day, which tied for the ninth most.

Fullerton will return to the links on Saturday with a shotgun start set for 11:30 a.m. PT/8:30 a.m. HT.
