Titans Come From Behind to Clinch Title at Invite

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Entering the day in third place, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team jumped ahead of San Diego and Arizona State to come away victorious at the Bill Cullum Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at Wood Ranch Golf Club.

 

Trailing Arizona State by 11 shots to begin the third round, the Titans shot a 281, the lowest score of the day during the final round, finishing the three rounds of play at 15-under par (849)

 

Fullerton edged San Diego at 14-under par (850) by just one stroke, while Arizona State shot a final round score of 290 (+2), to finish in the invitation 11-under-par (853) and in third place.

 

The tournament victory gives the Titans their seventh overall event championship since the program was reinstated for the 2009-10 season.

 

Leading the way for the Titans was senior Mark Anguiano, as he finished in a second place tie for the second-consecutive tournament. He followed up a five-under par (67) on Monday, with a three-under par (69) on Tuesday to finish one stroke back.

 

With a total score of 206 at ten-under, Long Beach State's Daniel Chian finished atop the individual leaderboard. Chian shot a third round six-under par (66) and finished –just one stroke ahead of both Anguiano and Arizona State's Jon Rahm -- who finished with a total score of 207 (-9).

 

Anguiano completed his ninth consecutive round at par or better to start the season. He wasn't the only Titan in the top five as senior Corey Gard moved up from a tie for sixth, entering the final round, to finish in fifth place with a 6-under par 209 following a third round of 70 (-2).

 

Junior Ryan Tetrault also moved up the leader board, finishing the Invitational tied for 14th, with his final round 70 (-2).

 

Freshman Kyle De Silva and senior Josh Park shot 72 and 73, respectively, over the final 18 holes. De Silva finished the tournament at 1-over (217), in a tie for 23rd, his best finish of the season. Park finished 4-over (220) in a tie for 35th to round out the Titan lineup.

 

For the tournament Anguiano (six-under) and Gard (four-under) led the field in Par 4 scoring with a 3.80 and 3.87 respectably.

 

The Titans travel back to Hawaii for the second consecutive year, to participate in the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational Nov. 4-7.
