FULLERTON, Calif. -- Cal State Fullerton posted a sweep of the Big West Conference Golfer of the Month awards for September as senior Mark Anguiano and junior Tisha Alyn Abrea were honored by the league office for the first time in their careers on Thursday afternoon.

Anguiano's award is the first for the men's program since the sport returned to campus in 2009-10 while Abrea's is the second for the women after Taylor Fowler earned the Titans' inaugural honor in February of 2012.

On the men's side, Anguiano missed individual medalist honors by a single stroke in back-to-back tournaments for Cal State Fullerton, but still posted a pair of top-three finishes in September to kick-off the season in grand fashion.

He tied for third in a field of 81 golfers at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate in Pullman, Wash., to start the year, shooting a 6-under-par 204 for the tournament to lead his squad to a second-place finish overall -- just one shot back of champion, and host, Washington State. After opening with a round of 70, Anguiano improved in each ensuing round, carding a 69 and 65 over the next 36 holes en route to a 54-hole school record. His final round 65 represented the best individual round by a Titan since John San Juan shot a 65 at the Del Walker Invitational on Oct. 22, 2009.

Anguiano, who now has shot six rounds at par or better to start the season, followed that performance up with another tie for third at the Dash Thomas Memorial in Boise, Idaho, finishing with a final round 66 to move up the leader board after finishing day one in a tie for seventh. His 206 total is the second-lowest individual score in school history since the program was reinstated.

On the women's side, Abrea posted a pair of top-10 finishes to lead the Titans in their first two events of the year, including a tie for third place out of 84 golfers at the rain-shortened Rose City Collegiate in Oregon.

Abrea opened the season with a tie for eighth out of a field of 64 at the Minnesota Invitational, rebounding from a first-round 78 to shoot 75-74 over the next 36 holes and finish with an 11-over-par 227. She followed that up two weeks later with the best 36-hole score in school history, shooting a season-best 71 in the final round to finish at 2-over (146) and help the team improve from 11th to fourth place.

The junior logged her fourth-career top-five finish in Oregon -- tying her with two other golfers for the most in school history -- and her 15th career top-20 finish -- the second most in school history. Abrea has finished in the top 10 in each of her last three tournaments dating back to the 2013 Big West Conference Championships.

Cal State Fullerton's men's golf team is away from the links until the end of October when it takes on the field at the Bill Cullum Invitational hosted by Cal State Northridge on Oct. 21-22, at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif. The women's team returns to action next week, traveling to Las Cruces, N.M., for the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational at the New Mexico State University Golf Course on Oct. 7-9.
