Mirin Fader of the Orange County Register focused on Cal State Fullerton freshman forward Jackson Rowe. The Toronto, Ontario native leads the team in rebounding this season as well as field goal percentage. Fader talked to Rowe about his role on the team as a freshman and his drive to make his family back in Canada proud.

As a kid, Jackson Rowe discovered rebounding was about being in the right place at the right time.

He learned success on the glass dealt with footwork — where to position your feet to maximize the best chance of grabbing the ball; physicality — how to use your body to move your defender out of the way to fight for position; timing — when to box out, when to leap up and grab the board at its highest peak.

But the biggest lesson he learned? Rebounding is about desire, something that coaches can't teach.

"I was always told rebounding is about how much you want it, how much you really want to get the rebound," Rowe said. "It's definitely something I always have to bring with me. It's the reason (CSUF's coaching staff) brought me here."

Rowe has proven to be a tenacious rebounder in his rookie season for the Titans (8-9 overall, 2-2 Big West). The 6-foot-7, 210-pound starting forward out of Wasatch Academy in Utah is averaging a team-best 6.5 boards, plus 9.8 points, per game.
