The Field is Set

May 31, 2010

Fullerton, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton (1) will host Stanford (2), New Mexico (3) and Minnesota (4) in this year's NCAA BaseballRegional to be held at Goodwin Field from June 4-7.

The announcement of the 64-team field and the 8 national seed was made this morning on ESPN in a half hour broadcast.

Fullerton (41-15) will face Minnesota on Friday night at 8 p.m. PT after the Regional's opening game between New Mexico and Stanford at 4 p.m. PT. All games in the The Fullerton Regional will be televised by ESPNU. The Coral Gables Regional, hosted by Miami, will be the other televised bracket in the first round of the playoffs.

ESPN's Justin Kutcher will be providing the play-by-play Fullerton, with Morgan Ensberg providing the analysis.

The winner of the Fullerton Regional will face off against the winner of the Los Angeles Regional in a best-of-three Super Regional. The Los Angeles Regional consists of No. 6 national seed UCLA (1), LSU (2), UC Irvine (3) and Kent State (4).

Arizona State (47-8), Texas (46-11), Florida (42-15), Coastal Carolina (51-7), Virginia (47-11), Louisville (48-12) and Georgia Tech (45-13) will join UCLA as national seeds, and will not have to face each other until the College World Series.

The Titans have met up with Minnesota 9 times since their first meeting in 1993, but most recently have faced them in both the 2004 and 2007 Regionals, beating them both times, 7-1. The Titans are 5-4 against the Golden Gophers all-time.

Fullerton is 6-2 all-time against New Mexico, which is making its first tournament appearance singe 1962. The Lobos and Titans have not met since 1986 when the TItans swept a home series, 18-4, 17-1, and 9-3.

The Titans and Cardinal have a long, storied history, and for the first time since 1986, and just the seventh time overall, the Titans did not face the Cardinal in the regular season. Stanford is one of few schools to have accumulated a winning record against the Titans, holding a 53-41 all-time advantage in the all-time series. Fullerton is 27-19 all time against Stanford at home and is 3-10 all-time against the Cardinal in the postseason. Most recently, Stanford eliminated Fullerton with a pair of Super Regional wins at Goodwin Field in 2008, then the Titans swept the Cardinal in a regular season series in 2009 at Goodwin Field.

The Titans won their 24th conference Title in 2010, taking the Big West Conference by storm with a 21-3 mark. They are making their 32nd all-time postseason appearance in 36 years at the Div. I level including 19 straight.

This year marks the 9th time (since 2000) Cal State Fullerton has hosted a Regional. Of the 8 previous Regionals at Goodwin Field, the Titans have advanced to the Super Regionals 7 times (all except 2000).
