TALKING STICK, Ariz. – Sophomore pitcher Tanner Bibee had a great start for the Titans (1-0) Friday afternoon as they defeated No. 19 TCU (0-1) at the Salt River Fields on opening day at the MLB4 Tournament.
Bibee had himself a quality start to say the least, going six innings while giving up just six hits and giving up no runs to the high powered Horned Frogs bats.
The Titans offense did just enough to give Bibee and the rest of the pitchers enough room to work with. With no runners on in the second inning, Daniel Cope stepped to the plate and blasted a home run to left field to give Fullerton the early 1-0 lead.
One inning later in the third, with freshman Jackson Lyon on second base Sahid Valenzuela hit a blooper to right field giving Lyon enough time to score and give Fullerton a 2-0 lead. Valenzuela went 3-for-4 on the day with one RBI. Lyon had an impressive debut for the Titans, going 2-for-3 with one run.
Gavin Velasquez came on in relief of Bibee in the seventh inning and had an impressive return after missing most of the 2018 season with an injury. Velasquez gave the Titans two solid innings, giving up just two hits and no runs.
Freshman Michael Weisberg opened some eyes and showed that he can be the next shutdown closer. Weisberg pitched the ninth inning and gave up just one hit to close out the game for Fullerton.
Fullerton returns to action Saturday afternoon against No.1 Vanderbilt with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. PT.
