Eshelman Chosen to Start in Triple-A All-Star Game

FULLERTON, Calif. – Former Cal State Fullerton pitcher Thomas Eshelman has been chosen to be the starting pitcher for the International League team in the Triple-A All-Star Game.

Eshelman is in the midst of a fantastic season and has emerged as the ace for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, the Triple-A affiliate for the Philadelphia Phillies. After starting the season in Double-A, he was promoted to the Iron Pigs on May 8 and has dominated the International League since then. He currently sports an impressive 1.96 ERA and 0.94 WHIP, both of which lead the IL. He is also tied for second in Minor League Baseball in wins (10). His Lehigh Valley career started with a 14 inning scoreless streak, the longest by an Iron Pigs pitcher to begin a career.

Originally, drafted in the second round by the Houston Astros in June of 2015, he was a part of a trade in December sending him to Philadelphia. Since then, he has become one of best, most consistent pitchers in the Phillies' minor league system. This All-Star appearance will be his second minor league all-star appearance, the first being in 2016 at the A+ All-Star Game.

The precision throwing right-hander played three seasons at Cal State Fullerton and was jaw-dropping. He had a career 1.65 ERA which is tops in Titan history. Even more impressive, his 0.43 walks per nine innings shattered the NCAA record of 0.75, a record that stood for 45 years. In his time at Fullerton, Esh was a three time All-American, three-time Big West Conference honoree including Freshman Pitcher of the Year in 2013, and a two-time Golden Spikes Award semi-finalist among many other accolades.

The 2017 Triple-A All-Star Game will be nationally televised Wednesday July 12th on the MLB Network, beginning at 9 p.m. EST.
