Gavin (3-0) was as good as he's ever been on Sunday, as his 14 punch outs are the most any Titan has recorded since Thomas Eshelman also fanned 14 on May 30, 2015 vs. #19 Arizona State. In all, the performance marked Gavin's third quality start of the season, while it's also the second start this season where he failed to record a walk. Gavin retired 16 straight Lobos to end his day, while Fullerton retired 19 batters in a row overall to end the game.
Blake Workman pitched a 1-2-3 ninth frame to preserve the win for Gavin and earn his first save of his career.
Offensively, Scott Hurst notched his fourth multi-hit game of the season, going 3-of- 4 from the plate. Timmy Richards plated the lone run of the afternoon for either side, as he went 1-of-4 with an RBI. Dillon Persinger also went 1-of-4, while scoring the only run of the game.
Sahid Valenzuela also extended his hit streak to three straight games, picking up two knocks in the contest, while going 2-of-4 from the dish.
Runs were hard to come by in the series finale, as the Titans stranded eight runners on base for the day, but Fullerton got all it needed in the third frame. Persinger launched a one-out double to left field, before Richards singled up the middle to drive in Persinger a batter later.
With the Titans holding a 1-0 advantage after three innings, Gavin took care of the rest, as no Lobo collected a base hit after the third inning. In fact, Lobo starting pitcher Luis Gonzalez was the only player to record a hit or even reach base for New Mexico on Sunday.
For Fullerton (14-5), the seven-game win streak is the most consecutive games won since winning 10 straight contests from May 15 – June 6, 2015. The Titans have won six games by one run this season, including five over the last seven games.
Fullerton now hits the road again, beginning a season-long eight-game road trip Tuesday at San Diego at 6 pm PT.
