SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton's Sierra Ungerman and Freek Van de Weerd led the Titans to fourth-place finishes for both the men and women at the NCAA West Region Preview on Saturday morning at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.

"It was a very positive day for both squads as both teams were the top finishing teams from the Big West Conference," coach John Elders said. "Overall, I'm really pleased with both squads. We were a little beat up from training, but we still managed to perform well."

The men got started on the course first as their 8k race began at 9:35 a.m. PT. Freek Van de Weerd crossed the finish line first for the Titans as the true freshman placed 30th overall with a time of 24:41.6 to score 16 points for Fullerton.

Jose Penaloza and Joe Casco finished next for the Titans as Penaloza placed right behind Weerd at 31st with a time of 24:42.3 and Casco completed the tough course in a time of 24:55.9 to place 48th.

Titans Sam Pimentel and Jason Hillquist rounded out the final team score for Fullerton, which was 121 points to give the men's squad a fourth-place finish. CSUF finished with the first among Big West schools at the men's event.

"Freek Van de Weerd ran his best race of the year and edged Jose Penaloza for the teams' top spot," coach Elders said. "Joe (Casco) and Sam (Pimentel) both ran strong races with personal best times. This race also marked the return of Danny Ramirez to competition after missing the cross country and track season last year with an injury. His return can really boost our teams' potential this year."

On the women's side, Ungerman adds another top-10 finish to the list this season as she completed the 6k course in 21:03.8 to place seventh overall. She was the top-finisher for the Titans and has now finished in the top-10 in each event this season.

Sam Huerta also had a strong finish at the event as the true freshman continues to impress this season by finishing today's event with a time of 21:22.0 to place 21st overall.

Brianna Jacklin (41st, 21:39.4), Stephanie Ruiz (48th, 21:48.3) and Arianna Fuentes (54th, 21:55.7) rounded out a total team score of 122 for the Titan women to place fourth overall. It was the highest finish among Big West schools taking part in the women's event.

"After winning in San Diego, Sierra took it to the next level today," coach Elders said. "She put herself in great position early and moved from 14th to 7th in the later stages of the race. Sam ran solid and Brianna rallied after getting a slow start. We got a big boost from Arianna today as she ran as our fifth runner and is getting stronger every week."

Up next for the Titans is the Highlander Invitational in Riverside, Calif. The Fullerton men placed third overall, while the women finished fourth in last year's Highlander Invitational. Penaloza and Ungermann both posted top-10 finishes at last year's event as well.
