Fullerton Releases 2016 Schedule

FULLERTON, Calif. – Men's and women's cross country head coach John Elders will field rosters filled with veteran competitors for 2016 as Cal State Fullerton revealed its upcoming fall schedule on Tuesday.

The 2016 season is highlighted by five regular season meets, two of which are hosted by the Titans, the Mark Covert Classic and the Titan Invitational. Fullerton will also make trips to San Diego, Riverside and Sacramento for the West Region Preview.

"This season, we should have our most competitive teams in the last three to four years," Elders said. "This year's schedule will provide challenging competition leading into the championship season highlighted by the West Region Preview in Sacramento. That meet should include many of the best teams in the West as well as some of our region teams. The Big West Conference Championships will provide the challenge of dealing with the humidity of Hawaii."

The Titans will begin their season in Brea, Calif., at the Mark Covert Classic on Sept. 3. The Fullerton-hosted event enters its 31st year and honors two-time national champion and Cal State Fullerton's first Division II All-American, Mark Covert. The legendary distance runner led the Titans to the NCAA team title in 1971 while being world renowned for his American record for most consecutive days running at least a mile from July 23, 1968 and ending 45 years later on the identical date in 2013. Fullerton has clinched the title on four different occasions, with the Titans last hoisting the championship during the 2008 season.

Two weeks later, Fullerton will travel to the USD Invite (Sept. 17) taking place at Mission Bay, before heading to Sacramento for the West  Region Preview on Oct. 1 at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex as the Titans will get to screen the West Regional course.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, Fullerton will participate in the Highlander Invitational at the UCR AG OPS Course. In 2015, the men's squad finished sixth at UCR while the women placed fourth.

Fullerton will close the regular season hosting the Titan Invitational at the Titan Track Complex on Oct. 21 before traveling to Hawaii for the Big West Conference Championships. UH will host the championships for the first time since 1992 at Kahuku Golf Course.

The NCAA West Regionals will be hosted by Sacramento State at Haggin Oaks Golf Course on Nov. 11, followed by the NCAA Championships at Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 19.

On the men's side top competitors from 2015, senior Jose Penaloza, redshirt junior Joe Casco and sophomore Sam Pimentel return, while on the women's side, the senior trio of Sierra Ungerman, Stephanie Ruiz and Pamela Pelayo also comes back.
