CROSS COUNTRY JUNIOR (2015)
Competed in six events for the Titans…best Fullerton finish was fifth at the Rim Rock Classic, completing the 8k course in a time of 26:12.9 (10/03)…best overall place was 39th at the Highlander Invitational, finishing the 6k course in a time of 19:02.16 (10/17).
PRIOR TO CAL STATE FULLERTON
For two years (2013 & 2014) competed at Santa Barbara City College for head coach Scott Fickerson…both seasons the team qualified for the state championships…his PRs included: 21:27 (4-mile), 15:45 (5k), 33:02 (10k), and 4:16 (1,500-meters).
HIGH SCHOOL
A 2013 graduate of Foothill Technology High School in Ventura, Calif…competed at Buena High School (Ventura, Calif.) for athletics…was a four-year (2009-12) varsity letter winner for cross country and three-year varsity letter winner for track under head coach Michelle Burns…PRs included: 15:16 (3-mile), 4:37 (1,600-meters), 10:12 (2-mile), 2:06 (800-meters)…as a freshman earned the Rookie of the Year award for cross country and track…as a sophomore the team qualified for the CIF Prelims…as a junior, placed sixth at the Channel League finals with a time of 15:32, making all-Channel League team and qualified for the CIF Prelims as an individual…as a senior, placed fourth at the Channel League finals with a time of 15:16, making the all-Channel League team once again and qualified for the CIF prelims for the second straight year…won the Most Inspirational award.
PERSONAL
From Ventura, Calif…parents are Maria Rosario Montes Sotelo and Salvador Venegas Vargas…has one brother, Teofilo Galarza Sotelo and one sister, Yolanda Mariel Montes Sotelo…major is psychology with a kinesiology minor…career goal is to coach distance teams at the high school or community college level…chose Cal State Fullerton because the school had the academic qualities that fit both his academic and career goals, while also having a cross country team that would train him to better himself as an athlete…hobbies and interests include taking bike rides, spending time with his girlfriend and her family, reading, napping and playing mobile games…favorites include: the beach in Ventura and Santa Barbara (places to run), Louis Zamperini (athlete), Batman Trilogy (Batman Begins, Dark Knight, Dark Knight Rises), The Notebook, Premium Rush (movies), Twenty-One Pilots, Nate Ruess (musical artists), Batman and Psychology, To Kill a Mockingbird, Little Brother, Metzger’s Dog (books), Edward Norton, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jennifer Lawrence (actors/actresses), shrimp (food).
