SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton completed the 2013 men's and women's cross-country seasons with 24th and 29th place finishes, respectively, at the NCAA West Regionals on Friday at Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento.

"We didn't finish the season in the way we hoped or were capable of," head coach John Elders said. "It's disappointing we didn't finish strong, but both of our programs took a step forward at the conference level."

The men's squad, which was without top runner Gilbert Solorza due to injury, was led by junior Jayson Perez as he completed the 10k course in a time of 31:58 finishing in 101st place.  For Perez, it was the second time in 2013 that he led the Titan squad.

Freshman Jose Penaloza finished 108th with a time of 32:04, followed by junior Brandon Perry (132nd, 32:36), sophomore Jeff Little (141st; 32:51), junior Sean Graham (142nd; 32:52) and sophomore Kevin Russell (159th; 33:24).

Stanford captured the NCAA West Regionals men's title with 53 points followed by Oregon (64), Portland (92), Boise State (117) and Arizona State (184).

The top Big West finisher was Cal Poly in seventh place with 191 points.

On the women's side, the Titans were led by sophomore Emily Taylor as she finished the 6k race in a time of 21:45, which was good for 131st. It was the second time this season that Taylor was Fullerton's top finisher, dating back to the Fresno Invitational on Sept. 14.
Sara Taylor, Fullerton's top runner at the Big West championships completed the race in 141st with a time of 21:54 followed by Arianna Fuentes (162nd; 22:12), Ana Valdovinos (164th; 22:15), Celinda Manzo (199th; 22:48) and Tijerra Lynch (200th; 22:50).

Fullerton finished in 29th place with a total of 778 points. Arizona (84) captured the women's NCAA West Regional title followed by Stanford (94), Oregon (120), San Francisco (140) and Washington (162).

The top Big West finisher was UC Davis in seventh place with 221 points.

"We have a stable foundation of young athletes to build the program around and we'll continue to get better," Elders said. "We learned this year what it takes to compete at conference level, and now we have to learn what it takes to compete at the regional level. I believe we have the talent."
