Women's TF Wins Big West Challenge, Men Take Second

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton track and field competed at the Big West Challenge on Friday night and the women's squad took first place while the men's team earned a runner-up finish.

The women's squad comfortably won as they tallied 192 points while the second-place Long Beach State 49ers had 178.5 points and UC Santa Barbara had 176.5 in third place. UC Irvine rounded out the standings with 115 in fourth place. On the men's side, LBSU won with 202.5 points, Fullerton was second with 193 and UC Santa Barbara was third at 163.5. UCI had 100 in fourth place.

Kelsey Carroll won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase as she set a new personal best by roughly 20 seconds, clocking a time of 10:53.55. Jorge Sanchez won the race on the men's side with a time of 9:08.68, not far off his PR of 9:05. Samantha Huerta won the women's 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:25.83, narrowly missing her school-record time of 4:25.03. Jake Smith took first place in the men's race with a time of 3:52.20, winning by over two seconds. Huerta and Sandra Flores went 1-2 in the 800 meters with respective times of 2:09.80 and 2:12.85. Trinity Ruelas (9:59.52) and Alyssa Block (10:06.07) took first and third place, respectively, in the women's 3,00-meter race. 

Naiah Boardingham won the long jump with a season-best mark of 19-11 (6.07m, +1.9 wind). In just her second competition of the season, Boardingham's mark is the best in the Big West Conference this season. Iesha Hamm earned a runner-up finish in the women's high jump with a clearance of 5-7 (1.70m) and Marcel Sylvester was also second on the men's side at 6-6.75 (2.00m). Brandon McLaurin won the men's triple jump with a personal-best mark of 47-10 (14.58m, +0.4 wind).

Marcel Espinoza won the men's 400-meter race at 47.17 while Parris Samaniego was third at 47.82. Mason Rollins won the men's 100 meters with a wind-aided time of 10.45 (+2.9 wind) and won the 200 meters at 21.28 (+1.3 wind). Samaniego, Chris Shiley, Rasaun House and Espinoza won the 4x400-meter relay by about three seconds with a time of 4:11.76.

In the men's pole vault, the Titans went 1-2-4 as Ryan Polakiewicz won with a clearance of 15-3 (4.65m) and Thomas Slakey cleared the same height but had more misses to take second place. Ernesto Collazo was fourth at 14-9 (4.50m).

Fullerton took first and second in the women's javelin competition as Nicole Clark won with a toss of 157-3 (47.94m) and Kelsey McKelvey was second at 140-6 (42.84m). Sierra Valdivieso and Bertha went 2-3 in the women's discus with respective marks of 155-4 (47.36m) and 154-11 (47.22m).

Mariah Stewart clocked a 100-meter hurdles time of 14.26 (+2.0 wind) to take third place overall. Madison Moku was third in the 400-meter hurdles at 64.09. Morgan Love, Kiana Clay, Zuri Henderson and Mia Franco clocked a time of 3:50.62 to take second place in the women's 4x400-meter relay.
