Men Second at Big West Challenge, Women Set New Meet Record in 4x400


LONG BEACH, Calif. --- The Cal State Fullerton men's outdoor track and field team placed second on Friday at the Big West Challenge hosted by Long Beach State at Jack Rose Track, while the women's team recorded several personal records and first-place finishes.

 

"This was a really strong meet for the men, and our women were undermanned with injuries, but performed well overall," head coach John Elders said. "It's a good sign moving forward for us as we are just trying to get better every week and for the Big West Championships at our home facility."

 

The men totaled 183 points behind Long Beach State's 197, while UC Santa Barbara (178) and UC Irvine (100) trailed the Titans. The women finished fourth with 138.50 points trailing UC Santa Barbara (190), Long Beach State (182.50) and UC Irvine (157).

 

Junior Anthony Applequist set a new meet record in the triple jump as he placed first with a mark of 15.54 meters.

 

In addition, junior Mason Rollins set PRs in both the 100 meters (10.58) and 200 meters (21.45) as he placed first in the 100 meters followed by teammate Eli Penick (10.65).

 

Senior Darion Zimmerman won the 200 meters in a personal-best time of 21.12 which tops the Big West Conference, while also placing second in the 400 meters (47.69).

 

Junior Mason Guzman-Sanchez set a new PR in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.41, which was good for second place.

 

The Titans' 4x100-meter relay team of Penick, Zimmerman, Rollins and Luis Matos clocked a time of 40.99 to claim first place.

 

Sophomore Diego Courbis won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 52.52 while Casey Kory set PRs in the 100 meters (10.90) and 200 meters (22.18).

 

Additional PRs were set by Jorge Sanchez in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:38.65), Joe Casco in the 3,000 meters (8:39.38), Sam Pimentel in the 3,000 meters (8:42.57) and Frank Van de Weed in the 3,000 meters (8:45.02).

 

Junior Trevor Gorwin placed first in the shot put with a mark of 18.21 meters, a new PR and distance that ranks second in the Big West Conference.

 

On the women's side, the team of Mia Franco, Zuri Henderson, Fanny Giron and Kiana Clay set a new record in the 4x400-meter relay clocking a time of 3:43.49 – a time that leads the Big West.

 

Henderson and Clay both set PRs in the 400 meters as Henderson took first in a time of 55.04, followed by Clay at 55.17.

 

Pamela Pelayo clocked a time of 10:59.44 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to place second and set a new PR, while Brianna Jacklin (10:19.82) and Stephanie Ruiz (10:21.41) each set PRs in the 3,000 meters.

 

Samantha Huerta (4:34.97) and Arianna Fuentes (4:36.80) produced second and fourth finishes, respectively, in the 1,500 meters as Fuentes set a new PR.

 

Freshman Bertha Sola placed second in the discus as her mark of 45.93 meters was a new PR, while fellow rookie Ciera Williams set a new PR in the hammer throw (46.39m).

 

Cal State Fullerton will be busy next week beginning with the CA Invitational Combined Events on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by the Beach Pacific Coast Invite on Thursday and the Mt. SAC Relays (Thursday-Saturday, April 15.)
