Titans Look Back at 2013-14 Facility Upgrades

FULLERTON, CALIF. - Cal State Fullerton made some noticeable changes to its athletic facilities on campus over the last year, beginning with the unveiling of the new floor design for the 49-year old Titan Gym.

Cal State Fullerton alumnus and current Director of Digital Media for the Athletic Department, Michael Greenlee (’98), designed and laid-out the court, and construction of the new gym floor was completed by Steve Wright and his staff at Champion Hardwood Floors in Canyon Lake, Calif. The Titans also added Cal State Fullerton ribbons around Titan Gym as the department continues to brand its facilities.

"Our new gym floor goes hand-in-hand with the new era of Titan basketball," head men's basketball coach Dedrique Taylor said. "It differentiates us and gives us a look that our current student-athletes and alumni can be proud of.”

In addition to the new floor and signage in the gym, the Titan Tennis Courts received resurfacing, new signage and an individual court scoring system. The track and field/cross country programs also remodeled their locker rooms.

“The upgrade on our tennis courts will help elevate our program to a whole new level,” said head women’s tennis coach Dianne Matias. “To be able to play on the new courts is an advantage for our program, our student-athletes, the student body, as well as from a recruiting standpoint.”

In November of 2013, Cal State Fullerton Athletic Director Jim Donovan, Assistant Athletic Director Aaron Tapper and Director of Strength and Conditioning Isaac Salazar, along with Chief of Operation for Student Affairs Dr. David Forgues unveiled the Titans new weight room. Located in the Kinesiology and Health and Science building, the project was led by the on-campus department of Capital Project Management, with the construction being completed by NuAge Development.

“We have eight HD elite combo racks that include a power rack, a half rack as well as reverse hooks to create a third half rack,” explained Salazar. “This allows our staff to maximize the space and have the ability to safely train a large number of athletes at one time by creating 24 places.”

The flooring allowed Fullerton to create a custom wood inlay platform layout to establish a larger and more usable training space. The weight room is equipped with Eleiko weightlifting equipment, one of the world’s best barbell and plate companies, which was used in the 2012 London Games.

“We have increased the number of racks, dumbbells, bars and plates to provide the student-athlete with the best training resources to develop, perform, and stay durable for their upcoming seasons and future careers,” Salazar said. “We have also upgraded by bringing in technology such as Dartfish and Coach’s Eye to create greater feedback to ensure proper weight training technique and progression.”

Most recently, Goodwin Field, home of the four-time national champion
baseball program, received updates with its Wall of Honor lining the
entrance to the facility, as well as an outfield fence upgrade.

“Originally we had section signs that blocked the view from some of the stadium seats so we decided to develop a new way to showcase the history of our great baseball program,” explained Aaron Tapper, Assistant Athletics Director of Marketing and the former Director of Facilities.

“Our goal is to win championships and quality facilities afford us better opportunities to achieve that goal,” Tapper said.
