THE 1984 FOOTBALL TEAM
Football / Inducted Nov. 1, 2019

The 1984 Cal State Fullerton football team had a historic run, going 12-0 that year while winning the Pacific Coast Athletic Association Conference Title with a 7-0 conference record. The team initially went 11-1, however, UNLV was forced to forfeit its games after using ineligible players.

Legendary coach, Gene Murphy led the 1984 team in his fifth season at Cal State Fullerton. Murphy would go on to coach the Titans until the program was disbanded following the 1992 season.

Two members of the team were taken in the 1985 NFL Draft as offensive tackle Daren Gilbert was selected in the second round with the 38th overall pick by the New Orleans Saints while defensive tackle Andre Pinesett was taken in 10th round by the Indianapolis Colts.

More than a dozen members of the team went on to have professional careers, including quarterback Damon Allen who had a historic career in the Canadian Football League. Allen became professional football's all-time leading passer with 72,381, surpassing Warren Moon for most yards combined in the NFL and CFL. Today Allen sits third on that list behind Anthony Calvillo and Drew Brees while remaining ahead of Peyton Manning.

Wide receiver Allen Pitts also went on to have a very successful career in the Canadian Football League, racking up 18,891 career receiving yards to rank him third all-time. Pitts also holds the record for most receiving yards in a single season with 2,036 and ranks second in receptions in a single season with 126.
