Women’s Volleyball Swept at Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball fell in straight sets on the road Tuesday night to Long Beach State.

Lolo Fonua notched six kills on a .357 clip to lead the Titan offense, with Danielle Jefferies also knocking down six kills on a .125 hitting percentage. Lyla Traylor added five kills, three digs and a pair of blocks, while Bianca Martinez added four kills and three blocks. Kyahana Robinson had three kills and three blocks for the Titans.

Elizabeth Schuster posted a double-double with 21 assists and 11 digs, while Nadia Koanui contributed 10 digs. Malie McClure and Dominique Velarde each had six digs on the night.

The Titans could not quite contain a hot-hitting Long Beach State team that hit at a .290 clip for the match. The loss moves Cal State Fullerton to 12-9 on the season and 6-7 in Big West play.

Long Beach State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in set one before the Titans clawed back to within one, 10-11, following kills by Traylor and a block from Robinson and Stewart. Teams traded points, as a Robinson kill brought the score to 17-14 for The Beach. Long Beach extended its lead to six, 22-16, before ultimately winning the set 25-19.

The second period started off back and forth, with a Traylor kill and Koanui ace tying things up at five. The Beach, however, scored seven of the next eight points to go up 12-6. The Titans later scored three straight with kills by Robinson, Jefferies and a Robinson ace to narrow their deficit, 14-10. Long Beach State then used a 7-2 to go up 21-12, before going on to take set two, 25-16.

The Titans got off to a quick start in the third set, taking a 5-2 lead off a trio of kills from Fonua and another from Martinez. The Beach responded, though, tying things up at eight before using a 5-1 run to take a 13-9 advantage and force a Titans timeout. The Titans came back to tie things late in the set at 21, following kills by Jefferies, Martinez and a block by Fonua and Martinez.

But Long Beach State prevailed, scoring the next four points to take set three, 25-21, and complete the sweep.

Next up, the Titans head to Hawaii to take on the Rainbow Wahine on Saturday, November 5th. First serve is slated for 10:00 p.m. PT.
