Titans Come Up Short Versus Cal Poly

FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball came up short against Cal Poly Friday night at Titan Gym, falling in straight sets. 

Danielle Jefferies led the Titan offense with seven kills to go with an ace, a block and a dig, while Lyla Traylor posted six kills, six digs and a pair of blocks. Lolo Fonua, Naia Stewart and Bianca Martinez each tallied five kills on the night, with Martinez adding a team-best three blocks. 

Elizabeth Schuster notched 27 assists, seven digs and three kills while Dominque Velarde added a team-best 16 digs and a pair of aces. Nadia Koanui contributed 10 digs and three aces for the Titans.

The first set remained tight early, with a block by Martinez and Traylor bringing the score to 8-7 for Cal Poly. The Mustangs, however, scored the next seven points to go up 15-7. Cal Poly extended its lead before a kill from Martinez and a Mustang attack error brought the Titans within nine, 21-12. Cal Poly went on to take set one, 25-15. 

The Mustangs jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the second before kills from Schuster, Stewart and Jefferies brought the Titans within two, 13-11. Teams then traded points, with kills by Fonua and Jefferies and a Velarde service ace bringing the score to 20-18 for the Mustangs. Cal State Fullerton staved off three consecutive game points, but Cal Poly eventually took set two, 25-23. 

The Titans got off to a quick start in the third period, with kills by Martinez, Traylor and Jefferies putting Cal State Fullerton up 8-5. A block by Jefferies and Robinson later put the Titans up 11-10.

An 8-1 Mustang run, however, then gave Cal Poly an 18-12 advantage. Teams traded points as kills by Martniez, Jefferies and Stewart brought the score to 23-18 for the Mustangs. Cal Poly then scored two of the next three to take the third set, 25-19, and complete the sweep. 

The Titans remain home tomorrow, Saturday, October 29th, to take on CSU Bakersfield. First serve is slated for 5:00 p.m. PT.
