Titans Fall in Straight Sets at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball fell to Cal Poly in straight sets Saturday night at the Mott Athletics Center. 

Bianca Martinez, Danielle Jefferies and Lyla Traylor tallied six kills apiece for the Titans on the match, with Martinez and Jefferies each adding a pair of blocks. Elizabeth Schuster led the team in assists with 24 and digs with nine. Marisse Turner and Julia Crawford added four kills apiece for the Titans. 

The Titans kept things close in the second and third sets before ultimately falling to the Mustangs, who tallied 47 kills to Cal State Fullerton's 31. Cal Poly tallied 51 digs on the night to the Titans' 32 as Cal State Fullerton's six-match winning streak was brought to an end. 

The Titans fought back from an early 0-3 deficit in the first period, as kills from Traylor and Jefferies and a block by Martinez and Jefferies put Cal State Fullerton up 4-3. Teams then traded points, as a solo block from Turner gave the Titans a 8-7 lead. Cal Poly, however, proceeded to score nine straight to take a 16-8 advantage before finishing off the 25-14 set win.

The second set remained tight early, with Jefferies and Traylor each notching a kill to bring the score to 7-6 for the Mustangs. A 3-0 Titan run brought Cal State Fullerton within one later in the period, 12-11. A block from Martinez and Jefferies followed by a Jefferies kill kept the Titans within three, 21-18, before a 4-1 Cal Poly run gave the Mustangs set two, 25-19. 

Cal Poly got off to a quick start in the third, scoring ten consecutive points to go up 12-2. The Titans, however, responded with a 7-0 run of their own highlighted by a Naia Stewart solo block and Turner kill to bring Cal State Fullerton within three, 12-9. The Titans kept things close, as a kill from Lolo Fonua and another by Turner brought the score to 21-18 for the Mustangs. Cal Poly then scored four of the next five points to take set three, 25-19, and complete the sweep. 

Cal State Fullerton returns to Titan Gym for their conference home-opener against Long Beach State on Tuesday, September 27th. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. PT.
