Volleyball Splits Season Opening Doubleheader

MOSCOW, Ida. - Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball split their season opening doubleheader with a sweep of Eastern Washington in match one before falling to Illinois-Chicago in five sets in the second match.

The Titans kicked off their season against Eastern Washington at the Idaho Volleyball Classic and came out with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-22) sweep over the Eagles. As a team, Fullerton posted a 24.8% hit percentage en route to their first victory of the season.

A pair of freshmen led the way in their Fullerton debuts as Elizabeth Schuster recorded her first career double-double finishing with 27 digs and 11 assists, while Julia Crawford led the game with 11 kills finishing just shy of a double-double with nine digs.

Tyler Fezzey was second on the team with eight kills and Nicole Shuhandler was right behind her with six kills. Savahna Costello posted a game-high 19 digs to go along with four assists.

Fullerton took the early advantage with a dominant 25-14 first set win after going on a 9-2 scoring run in the middle of it. They carried that momentum winning both the second and third sets by the score of 25-22 leading to their first win of the season.

In their second game of the day, the Titans faced off with the Flames of Illinois-Chicago and battled the whole match, but ultimately fell 2-3 (29-27, 23-25, 25-20, 18-25, 11-15).

Crawford had a phenomenal game recording her first career double-double with 20 kills and 15 digs. Schuster made it 2-for-2 recording her second double-double of the day with 35 assists and 11 digs. Shuhandler had another solid effort posting seven kills to go along with 5.0 blocks (three solo, four assists).

CSF and UIC battled back and forth the entire first set, but the Titans would come out on top 29-27. Fullerton would drop the the second set 23-25 to the Flames, evening up the match at one set apiece.

Fullerton bounced back immediately taking the third set 25-20 to get back in the driver's seat. Unfortunately, Illinois-Chicago would answer taking the fourth set 25-18 to force a deciding fifth set.

The Flames took the early lead in the deciding set and the Titans could not complete a comeback falling 15-11 and dropping the match.

Cal State Fullerton will wrap up the weekend against the host Vandals tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
