Titans Drop Tough One in Davis, 3-2

Davis, Calif. - UC Davis senior Devon Damelio had a career-high 28 kills and 24 digs and was a key component to a fifth set comeback, as the Aggies defeated visiting Cal State Fullerton, 3-2, in Big West volleyball action Saturday afternoon at ThePavilion.

The Titans dip to 9-13 on the year and to 2-8 in league action and increase their consecutive loss count to a season-high six matches. The Aggies improve to 14-9, 6-4.

The Titans had battled all the way back from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set and then took a commanding 14-10 lead in the fifth, just one point from sweeping the season series. But Damelio single-handedly put a stop to that, picking up a kill to sideout, then another to make it 14-12. With Damelio on the line, the Aggies scored on three more rallies that ended with kills by hitter Mary Schroeder before Damelio finished it with her 28th kill. The win for Davis avenged the Oct. 4 five-set loss to the Titans in Fullerton.

Fullerton had three hitters in double-figures offensively. Holland Crenshaw had 15 kills without an error (.484) and held the line at the net with five blocks (two solos). Alyse Hensley had 16 kills, 11 digs and four blocks and Bre Moreland had 16 kills, 21 digs and two aces.

Shroeder had 17 kills and both Victoria Lee and Valerie Brian added 10 kills each to flank Damelio.

Both squads combined for a whopping 216 digs on the match, with UC Davis leading 113-103. Four Aggies, led by Megan Lancaster's match-high 26 digs, had double-digit scoops. Six Titans had 10-or-more, with Moreland (21), Paige Reed (22) and McKenna Painton (22) reaching into the 20s.

UC Davis out-served the Titans, landing 10 aces to the Titans' 3. Kendall Frisoli had a match-high 4 aces with Lindsay Dowd right behind with 3 for Davis. Moreland had two and Painton had the other for the visitors.

Moreland, Hensley and setter Julie Consani (59 assists, 11 digs) each logged double-doubles for the Titans in the loss. Setter Jenny Woolway and Damelio had double-doubles  for Davis.

The Titans have just one match next week, a Nov. 9 tilt with UC Riverside at Titan Gym. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
