SAN DIEGO – Cal State Fullerton's three doubles teams each earned victories on the first day of competition at the ITA Southwest Regional played at Barnes Tennis Center on Thursday, while three singles players advanced to the round of 32.
Junior Alexis Valenzuela recorded a pair of singles victories, defeating UC Riverside's Tracy Van in the round of 128, 6-1, 6-0, before moving past San Diego's Dana Oppinger in the round of 64 by the score of 6-1, 6-1. The Titans two-time all-Big West Conference honoree is slated to play Amanda Atanasson of UCSB in the round of 32 on Friday.
Also moving on to the round of 32 was Danielle Pham and Camille De Leon. Each received a bye in the round of 128.
In the round of 64, Pham defeated Shani Blecher of San Diego, 6-4, 6-4, while De Leon recorded a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over USC's Alexandra Letzt. Pham will play Arizona's Lauren Marker – the third overall seed in the tournament – on Friday in the round of 32. De Leon is scheduled to play Paulina Dubavets of UC Santa Barbara.
Freshman Sarah Nuno also picked up a singles win on Thursday defeating Luo Adler from UCSB, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, in the round of 128, before falling to the tournament's overall 10th seed, Luisa Stefani, from Pepperdine, 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 64.
Fullerton put together a second straight week of strong doubles performances with a sweep. After winning its flight last week, the team of Emilia Borkowski and Pham edged Scout Shutter and Mari Taslagyan of CSUN, 8-7, in the round of 64.
After reaching the finals in their flight last week, De Leon and Valenzuela moved past the round of 64 with an 8-1 win over CSUN's Skyla Alcon and Kiryang Kim.
Masako Makiba and Nuno edged UCSB's Jaimee Gilbertson and Stephanie Yamada, 8-7, in the round of 64.
