Titans Host Pair of Non-Conference Matches

FULLERTON, CA – Cal State Fullerton's women's tennis team steps back from Big West Conference competition this weekend to host a pair of non-conference matches.

On Friday at 1:30 p.m., the Titans (4-5) will take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles, who will carry a 1-7 record into a Wednesday match at CSUN.  On Saturday at 11 a.m., Fullerton will host former Big West member Pacific, which is 4-2 and will not have competed since Feb. 15.

Eastern Michigan boasts an all-international roster.  The 8-member squad hails from seven countries – Spain, Germany, Georgia, India, Colombia, Bulgaria and two from the Czech Republic.   The Eagles' victory came on Jan. 30, 5-2 over Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne.   The day after they play the Titans they have a match at UC Irvine before heading back to the Midwest.

The Pacific match promises to be a close one.   All four of the victories for the Tigers, who have five international players on their 9-woman squad, have been by a 4-3 score and two are common opponents with Fullerton.  The Titans lost to UC Davis and beat Nevada, also by 4-3 scores.  Pacific's other narrow victories came over UNLV and New Mexico State.  The Tigers have an unbeaten No. 3 doubles team in Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz and Antonella Santeusanio.

Fullerton will be trying to get back above the .500 mark.   The Titans had dropped 5 of 6 matches before beating the elements and Southern Utah Sunday by a 4-0 score.  Emilia Borkowski and Kalika Slevcove each won a singles point and teamed up successfully in doubles to pace the victory over the Thunderbirds.

Fullerton returns to Big West action on March 4 at UC Irvine.
