Titans Rally for Win in Opener

Titans Rally for Win in Opener
FULLERTON, Calif. – Alexis Valenzuela won the third set of the No. 1 singles match Saturday afternoon to rally Cal State Fullerton to a 4-3 non-conference women's tennis victory over Nevada in the Titans' season opener.  The WolfPack is now 1-1 including a 7-0 win Friday at UC Riverside in their opener.

Valenzuela dropped her first set, 6-2, to Sheila Morales but came back to even the match with a 7-6 win (8-6 tie-breaker) before finishing strong with a 6-2 final.

Fullerton won the doubles point but Nevada won three of the first four completed singles matches to leave the score 3-2 in favor of Nevada.  Fullerton tied it at 3-3 when Camille De Leon broke service in the final game of the No. 2 singles and won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 with a drop shot for the winning point against Jukliette Legendre.

"I'm really proud of how our team competed today," said Coach Dianne Matias.  "Today was a full team effort and the matches could have gone either way, but our team stayed calm and composed when the matches became close and just kept fighting."

Fullerton returns to action on the Titan Courts on Wednesday (Jan. 21) with a 1:30 p.m. contest vs. UC San Diego.  There is no admission charge for all Titan home matches.
