Whitmore, Williams Shine in Senior Day Doubleheader Sweep

FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton (34-16, 14-3 Big West) celebrated Senior Day with a sweep of Cal Poly (10-37, 4-13 Big West) on Saturday afternoon. The Titans took game one 2-1 in nine innings and followed it up with a 6-1 victory in game two.

Game one was a pitchers' duel as Dani Martinez and Steffi Best battled it out into extra innings. Martinez would pick up the victory throwing nine innings allowing just one run on two hits and three walks while striking out a career-best 11 batters. It's the most strikeouts for a Titan pitcher since Cerissa Rivera struck out 11 on March 24, 2017.

After retiring the first 11 batters she faced, Martinez surrendered the first run of the ballgame in the top of the fourth as the Mustangs strung together a walk and a pair of hits to take a 1-0 lead.

However, Fullerton responded in the bottom of the fifth thanks to Zoe Richard's sac fly to tie the game up at one run each.

The Titans would eventually come out victorious in the ninth inning as Kelsie Whitmore came through with the walk-off RBI double to give Fullerton the 2-1 victory.

In game two, the Fullerton offense came out to back a strong performance from starting pitcher Sophie Frost. The junior right-hander would go the distance allowing just one run on seven hits and a pair of walks while striking out five Mustangs. It marks her team-high sixth complete game of the season.

The offense was carried by Whitmore in game two as she belted a two-run home run to right-center in the second inning and another two-run home run to left-center in the fourth inning. She finished the day 3-for-7 with a double, two home runs, and five RBI across both games.

Ari Williams was a star on the day she celebrated her final homestand of her career going 2-for-3 in game one and then 3-for-3 with an RBI triple in game two. She now has sole possession of third place for most triples in program history.

With two wins today, it marks the 13th consecutive Big West series victory for the Titans. They will look for the sweep against Cal Poly tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
