FULLERTON, Calif. — The Cal State Fullerton softball team committed five-errors falling to No. 16 Nebraska, 9-2, while surrendering a 15-run inning at the hands of No. 7 Arizona, 15-0, at Anderson Family Field on Saturday.
With two losses in day two of the Judi Garman Classic, the Titans drop to 15-9 on the season, while No. 16 Nebraska moved to 14-7 and seventh-ranked Arizona climbed to 21-3.
Game One: No. 16 Nebraska 9, Cal State Fullerton 2
Nebraska's Tatum Edwards (7-4) tossed a complete game six-hitter, fanning six Titans in the process. Edwards yielded one earned run while surrendering three walks for her seventh victory of the season.
The Cornhuskers manufactured three runs in both the second and third inning and never looked back. Nebraska left-fielder Austen Urness lead the Huskers with a 3-for-4 evening, chipping in two RBI and two runs scored. Catcher Taylor Edwards contributed with two hits on three at-bats while designated player Kylee Muir gapped a two-run single into right center which was all the offense Nebraska needed.
Fullerton senior Lauren Mario tripled down the left line to score sophomore Samantha Galarza cutting the deficit down to 6-1, after four innings of play. The Huskers would tack on two more runs to shut the door, snapping a four-game winning streak for the Titans.
Monique Wesley (1-1) started the contest for the Titans, tossing 3 and 2/3 innings, yielding four runs on six hits. Wesley recorded her first loss of the season while chalking up her 12th appearance of the season.
CSF freshman Christina Washington appeared in relief, pitching 3 and 1/3 innings surrendering five hits and five runs to the Huskers.
Catcher Ariel Tsuchiyama batted 0-for-4 in game one, snapping a five-game hitting streak in the loss.
Game Two: No. 7 Arizona 15, Cal State Fullerton 0
Sophomore Jasmine Antunez started in the circle for the Titans in game two, tossing 4 and 1/3 innings of one-hit ball until the wheels started coming off.
The right-hander ran into trouble after a fielding error by third baseman Missy Taukeiaho, later followed by a two-run double by first baseman Hallie Wilson. Shortstop Kellie Fox added another two-run double later in the inning as the contest began to get out of hand. Fox concluded her evening batting 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
The fifth inning continued with Arizona's Chelsea Goodacre launching a two-run homer, scoring Courtney Rodriguez who singled just moments earlier. The hitting carousel continued as Goodacre was given her second at-bat of the inning. With two more Wildcats on board, the Temecula, Calif., native sent a fastball over the right field wall for an opposite field three-run homer, her second round-tripper of the inning.
Arizona starter Estela Pinon tossed a five inning one-hitter to silence Fullerton's offense all evening. The senior right-hander fanned seven Titans to go along with two walks.
Samantha Galarza produced the only hit for Fullerton, a single up the middle on a 2-2 pitch. Galarza finished the evening batting 1-for-2 with one strikeout.
The Wildcats used the fifth inning to score all 15 runs on 12 hits to run-rule Cal State Fullerton. The 15 run loss was the worst defeat since Texas handed the Titans a 23-0 shutout in the 2012 season.
