Titans Outlast Toreros, Remain Perfect

FULLERTON, Calif.— Missy Taukeiaho and Eliza Crawford both hit solo home runs as four Titans pitchers combine to hold the Toreros to only five hits in a 4-2 victory at Anderson Family Field on Wednesday evening.

Following tonight's win over the Toreros, Fullerton moves to a perfect 6-0 on the season as San Diego falls to 2-4. The Titans travel down south to the SDSU Campbell/Cartier Classic to face San Diego State (Thursday), Saint Mary's (Friday), Texas State (Friday), South Dakota (Saturday) and California (Saturday) in San Diego, Calif.

Cal State Fullerton grabbed an early lead when Taukeiaho led off the game with a solo home run to deep center field off of San Diego's Jenny Lahitte (2-2). The leadoff homer was Taukeiaho's third round tripper of the season, as the Titans were off to another quick start. Shortstop Gabby Aragon would later drive in Taukeiaho from first base on an RBI double to right center field extending the Titans lead to 2-0 after the third inning.

San Diego's Mary Grabowski had an answer of her own in the fourth, depositing a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall off of relief pitcher Desiree Ybarra (2-0). The Titans would add to the lead in the bottom half of the inning as catcher Ariel Tsuchiyama drew a walk with the bases loaded to move ahead 3-1, against the Toreros.

Crawford would release the dagger to the Toreros as she clubbed her third round-tripper in the past two games for the Titans. Head coach Kelly Ford implemented three Titans pitchers in relief to starter Jasmine Antunez, posting a combined five innings in the circle yielding only three hits to the Toreros by Ybarra, Christina Washington and Monique Wesley. Ybarra (2-0) grabbed the win in relief with three strikeouts as right-hander Wesley earned her first save of the season.

Notes: Following her third home run on the season, transfer Missy Taukeiaho has hit safely in all six games of the season, increasing her batting avg. 10-points (.625) to lead the Big West. Desiree Ybarra (2-0) joins teammates Jasmine Antunez and Christina Washington in capturing her second win of the season. Junior Eliza Crawford has hit her third home run in the past two Titans games, totaling six RBI in 2014, good for third highest on the team. CSF moves to 6-0 on the year, first time since the 2000 season under then head coach Michelle Gromacki. Infielder Samantha Galarza is on a three-game hitting streak after batting 2-for-3 against the Toreros, Wednesday evening.
