Cal Poly Defeats Titans 4-0 to Earn Series Sweep

FULLERTON, Calif. - After tossing a complete game shutout in game one against the Titans on Friday afternoon, sophomore Chloe Wurst came back a day later to deliver another complete game shutout in a 4-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton at Anderson Family Field on Saturday afternoon.

Cal Poly improves to 15-20-1 overall and 4-2 in the Big West, while Cal State Fullerton falls to 15-20 overall and 2-4 in the Big West.

After giving up a leadoff single up the middle to Ariel Tsuchiyama in the first inning, Wurst (8-8-1) settled down retiring the next six batters before hitting Jasmine Antunez in the leg. The La Verne, Calif. native allowed just four hits and issued no walks. The Titans were able to get only one runner to third base in the last two games.

Cal Poly got on the board first in the second inning off a solo shot to left center field from left fielder Lauren Moreno. Antunez would herself in a jam in the fourth inning after giving up back to back singles to Mariah Cochiolo and Moreno. The Mustangs would then capitalize in the inning on back to back walks issued to Whitney Gerhart and pinch hitter Madi Vogelsang scoring Cochiolo from third and putting Cal Poly up 2-0.

Cal Poly would add two more runs in the inning with a two-run single up the middle from second baseman Ashley Romano scoring Moreno and Gerhart. Antunez would be replaced by Desiree Ybarra in the fourth inning and would finish the game tossing 3 2/3 innings giving up no runs and four hits.

After not allowing a hit since the first batter of the game, Wurst would find herself in some trouble in the fifth inning after allowing two Titans to get on. Gabby Aragon reached on an error and Carissa Turang hit an infield single to third to start the fifth, Wurst would be able get herself out the inning after Melissa Sechrest and Tiffany Sheffler flied out.

Cochiolo was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Moreno added two runs scored. Fullerton second baseman Carissa Turang added two hits for the Titans in only her fifth start this season. Antunez falls to 9-12 on the season after giving up four runs off five hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Fullerton continues conference play against Long Beach State next weekend in Long Beach, Calif. The Titans and 49ers will play a doubleheader on Saturday April 6 at 12 and 2 p.m. and the series finale is set for noon from 49er softball complex on Sunday.

Game Note: The Titans were swept against Cal Poly for the first time in a three-game series format at Anderson Field. Fullerton was swept on the road in San Luis Obispo in 2010.
