Titans Split Decisions Day One of Long Beach State Invitational

LAKEWOOD, Calif.- Cal State Fullerton's Jasmine Antunez and Katey Laban combined for 14
strikeouts allowing only one hit in a 5-0 win against Weber State (1-16) in game one of the Long Beach State Invitational and a walk-off single by Virginia Tech's Courtney Liddle in the bottom of the seventh inning proppelled the Hokies to a 3-2 victory in game two.

Cal State Fullerton moves to 9-12 on the season, while No. 24 Virginia Tech improves to 13-1. The Titans will continue play in the Long Beach State Invitional when they return home to
Anderson Family Field tomorrow (Mar. 8) to face off against Charleston Southern at 7 p.m.

Game 1 Cal State Fullerton 5, Weber State 0

Freshman Jasmine Antunez tossed five shutout innings only giving up one-hit, while striking out 12 Wildcat batters in a 5-0 victory over Weber State. Antunez struck out the first nine of twelve Weber State batters to start the game, while tossing a perfect game for 3 2/3 innings.

The Titans got on the board first in the top of the second 1-0 after a fielding error by Weber State right fielder Jazmine Thompson allowed Fullerton's second baseman Lauren Mario to score from second.

In the fifth inning, Eliza Crawford would extend the Titan lead to 3-0 after belting a two-run home run to left field, good for her third home run of the season. Fullerton would bring in two more insurance runs in the sixth inning after an Ariel Tsuchiyama to right scored Carissa Turang and Ashley Carter.

Brooke Silva broke up Antunez's perfect game in the fourth inning when she hit a single to left field just out of the reach of shortstop Samantha Galarza. Katey Laban relieved Antunez in the sixth inning throwing two innings and not allowing a baserunner to close out the game.

Ariel Tsuchiyama was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and Desiree Ybarra also added two hits for the Titans.

Weber State's Morgan Allaband threw a complete game giving up five runs, three earned, off six hits and struck out two batters. The wildcats committed three errors, which allowed Fullerton many second chances.

Weber State falls to 1-16 and will play No. 24 Virginia Tech and North Dakota State tomorrow at Mayfield Park in Lakewood, Calif.

Game 2 Virginia Tech 3, Cal State Fullerton 2

The Titans jumped out to an early lead after back to back doubles by Ariel Tsuchiyama and Ashley Carter, but were shutout for the remainder of the game as Virginia Tech clawed their way back to take a 3-2 victory at Lisa Fernandez field Thursday night.

After opening up a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Hokies answered back in the bottom of the first with a Kelsey Mericka RBI single scoring center fielder Lauren Gaskill from third.

Gaskill would then tie the game up 2-2 in the fourth inning with a solo shot to center field. The Titans and Hokies battled for multiple innings, but in the bottom of the seventh inning Courtney Liddle's RBI single to left field to score Bkaye Smith from second would give the Hokies the walk-off victory.

Desiree Ybarra drew the start, giving up one run on four hits in a no decision. However, even though Ybarra was the starting pitcher head coach Kelly Ford used a strategy to switch pitchers each inning to throw off Virginia Tech's batters rotating in Jasmine Antunez also. Antunez tossed 3 1/3 innings giving up two runs off six hits, including the game-winning single to Liddle.

Virginia Tech's Kelly Heinz threw a complete game four-hitter to earn the victory as she improves 5-0 on the season.

Ashley Carter was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Eliza Crawford added a hit for the Titans. Kelsey Mericka was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Liddle was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Lauren Gaskill was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Virginia Tech improves to 13-1 and will play Weber State and No. 9 UCLA tomorrow at Mayfield Park in Lakewood Calif. before finishing out the Long Beach State Invitational against UNLV in Long Beach, Calif.
