Titans Upset No. 7 Missouri

FULLERTON, Calif.- The Cal State Fullerton softball team (5-8) upset the No. 7 ranked Missouri Tigers (9-1) in game one of the doubleheader 5-4, before dropping game two 7-0. Lauren Mario scored in the bottom of the sixth inning off a passed ball from Missouri pitcher

Lindey Muller to give the Titans the victory. In game two, the Tigers had 16 hits compared to two hits by the Titans to get the win over Cal Staate Fullerton 7-0. Desiree Ybarra was a combined 3-for-6 with a home run in the two-game set for the Titans.

Game one of the doubleheader was delayed an hour and a half due to an umpiring conflict.

The Titans head on the road to Los Angeles to face the UCLA Bruins at Easton Field in a
non-conference game at 2 p.m.

Game 1 Cal State Fullerton 5, Missouri 4

The first game of the doublheader between Missouri and Cal State Fullerton was delayed an hour and a half due to an umpiring conflict, but that wouldnt stop the Titans from upsetting the No. 7 ranked Tigers.

Cal State Fullerton took the lead 1-0 in the bottom of the third when redshirt junior Ariel
Tsuchiyama drove a 1-1 pitch up the middle to score Tiffany Sheffler from second base. The Titan lead wouldnt last long however. In the next half inning Missouri freshman Emily Crane belted a three-run home run to deep left field to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

A two out rally in the bottom of the fourth inning would help Cal State Fullerton cut the deficit
to 3-2. A two-out double to the left center gap from Fullerton second baseman Lauren Mario would extend the fourth inning. The next Titan batter Leesa Harris would then get her second RBI of the season with an RBI single to center field.

With the Titans trailing 3-2 in the fifth inning, Tsuchiyama hit a one-out double to left center
to start off the inning. Then designated player Desiree Ybarra belted a 3-2 pitch over the left
field fence for two-run home run giving the Titans a 4-3 lead.

Missouri would answer right back when senior third basemen Nicole Hudson tied up the game with a solo shot to right center. Cal State Fullerton would take the lead for good in the bottom  the sixth inning. Lauren Mario led off with a single, which she advanced to second on after anerror by Hudson. After advancing to third from a sacrifice bunt from Leesa Harris, Mario would eventually score on a passed ball from pitcher Lindsay Muller putting the Titans up 5-4.

Freshman Jasmine Antunez in her 10th start of the season pitched five innings giving up four runs off five hits in a no-decision. Antunez struck out three Tiger batters and handed the ball over to Desiree Ybarra (1-2) who earned the win after pitching the final two innings only giving up two hits and not allowing a run.

Muller (0-1) recorded the loss, tossing one inning and giving up one run. The Tigers were led by Hudson who was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI and Emily Crane who was 2-for-3 with three RBI's.

Ybarra was 2-for-3 with two RBI's, Mario was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Tsuchiyama was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

Game 2 Missouri 7, Cal State Fullerton 0

After losing game one 5-4, the No. 7 ranked Missouri Tigers had their way with the Cal State
Fullerton pitching staff. The Tigers had 16 hits in the game and a four run fifth inning helped
put the Titans away for good. Missouri had six different players have two hits including Angela Randazzo who was 2-for-3 with two RBI's.

In her second start of the season Nicole Hudson (3-0) pitched a complete-game two hitter to also help propel the Tigers to the victory. Hudson struck out four batters and only issued one walk.

The Titans were shut down in game two, only getting hits from Desiree Ybarra and a pinch hit
single from Carissa Turang in the bottom of the seventh. Ybarra (1-3) took the loss after tossing four innings giving up two runs off nine hits. Katey Laban relieved Ybarra in the fifth and was only able to get through one out in the fourth before getting relieved by Jasmine Antunez. Laban gave up four runs off three hits in 1/3 of an inning. Antunez closed out the game going 2 2/3 giving up one run off four hits.

Missouri got its first run on a wild play in the top of the third. With a runner on third base
Kelsi Jones hit a groundball to the shortstop Samantha Galarza who fired a throw to the catcher Ariel Tsuchiyama. After a round down between the third base line, Cal State Fullerton catcher the runner out, but the umpire eventually would call obstruction on the Fullerton catcher allowing the runner to score from third. Missouri scored four runs in the fifth off mulitple hits in the inning.

The Tigers improve to 9-1 on the season and head home to Cape Girardeau, Mo. to compete in the Missouri Breast Cancer tournament. The Titans fall to 5-8 on the season and will take on UCLA Tuesday Feb. 26th at 2 p.m. at Easton Field.
