AURORA, Ore. – Senior Tisha Alyn Abrea earned her first career victory and Cal State Fullerton held off San Francisco Tuesday afternoon to win the Rose City Collegiate hosted by Portland State at Langdon Farms Golf Club in Aurora, Ore.
Abrea earned the first victory in her Titans career, shooting a 1-over 73 in the final round to top the 75-player field with a collective 1-under 215. Abrea was the only golfer to shoot under par as Portland State's A Ram Choi finished second with a 1-over 217. Abrea had three birdies on the final day of the tournament and was tied for the lead at 1-under going into the final three holes with UC Irvine's Samantha Chan. Abrea sank a birdie on the 488-yard Par-5 No. 18 to secure the victory after posting a bogey on No. 16 and par on No. 17. Chan finished third with a 2-over 218.
Overall, Abrea finished the tournament with 10 birdies, second only behind sophomore teammate Martina Edberg's 11. Abrea has played in every tournament since her freshman year, playing in 28 tournaments and 83 total rounds overall coming into the Rose City Collegiate. Her previous best result was a second-place finish in her freshman season at the Fresno State Lexus Classic, where she shot a 1-over 217. Overall, Abrea led the field on par-3's with a 2.67 scoring average, shooting a collective 4-under throughout the tournament.
Abrea helped lead the Titans to the top of the team standings as Fullerton shot a collective 303 in the final round to finish the 54-hole event with a 26-under 890, three strokes ahead of runner-up San Francisco. Four of the Titans' five golfers finished in the top-25 while all five finished in the top-30. The Titans led all teams with 36 birdies at the Rose City Collegiate. It's the Titans fifth victory at a 54-hole event since the program was reinstated for the 2009-10 season and Fullerton's first victory since Oct. 12-13 of last season when they earned the top spot at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate.
Freshman Brittany Farrell recorded her first career round of par or better as she carded an even-par 72 in round three to finish in a tie for 17th place. Farrell came out on fire to start the day, recording three birdies in the first seven holes of play on Tuesday. She added a birdie on No. 11 but a bogey on No. 10 and double bogey on No. 12 cancelled those out. Despite that, Farrell still recorded the second best score of round three. The freshman finished the 54-hole event with 38 pars, which tied for sixth in the field.
Senior Makayla Mier placed 19th after shooting a 12-over 228 for the tournament. It was Mier's third-best score at a 54-hole event and her best finish since she placed 11th at The Gold Rush last season. Mier averaged 4.92 scoring average on Par-5's, which was tied for the sixth best mark in the tournament. Mier shot 1-under par on Par-5's at the two-day event.
Edberg slipped in the standings after going into the final round in a tie for ninth place. The sophomore shot a 10-over 82 in round three despite recording four more birdies on the final day. It was only Edberg's fourth career round of 80 or worse. Despite the struggles, Edberg still finished in the top-25, shooting a collective 14-over 230 to tie for 24th place.
Dakota Brown rounded out the Titans scoring, finishing in a tie for 29th place after posting a 15-over 231. It was Brown's best finish of her Titans career.
Cal State Fullerton will look to keep their momentum rolling as they head to the Price's New Mexico State Invitational on Oct. 6 in Las Cruces, N.M. the third of four events in their fall schedule.
