Titans Surrender Golden Goal to Hornets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Chimdum Mez's golden goal header in the 105th minute propelled the Sacramento State men's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout of Cal State Fullerton on Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field in Big West Conference action.

Despite the Titans holding a 22-9 shot advantage, in the second overtime period, Sacramento State's Cody Hoster delivered a pass from the midfield lobbed over the top of the Titan defense.

Mez was left one-on-one with Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper David Rodriguez Elias, and the 6-foot-5 senior forward was able to put his head on the ball in the challenge, sending his shot over Elias and into the goal.

Cal State Fullerton (4-5-2, 0-2-0 Big West), on a two-game losing streak for the first time this year, has now played in five overtime matches with a record of 1-2-2. The Hornets improve to 3-6-2 and 1-1-0 in the Big West.

Eleven of CSF's shots were directed on goal, forcing Hornet goalkeeper James Del Curto into 10 saves as well as the Hornets recording a team save on Colin Okirie's shot in the 51st minute.

Cal State Fullerton held a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks, and the Titans committed 11 fouls compared to the Hornets' 10. CSF was also issued three cards.

Rodriguez Elias tallied four saves for the Titans. Marc Fenelus led Fullerton with seven shots.

The Titans return to action on Thursday at 8 p.m., hosting UC Santa Barbara at Titan Stadium.  The game will follow the Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team's match with Long Beach State at 5:30 p.m. One ticket is good for both games.

Notes: Cal State Fullerton is 1-2-2 in overtime matches this season…the Titans lead the all-time series with Sacramento State, 5-2-0…Fullerton was shut out for the third time this season…the Titans last opened Big West Conference play 0-2-0 in 2011…Fullerton has lost back-to-back matches for the first time this year.
