FULLERTON, Calif. – Coming off of a team co-championship in the Orange County Collegiate Classic, which featured first and second place finishes by Titans Derek Castillo and Jack Dyer, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team will fly to the islands to participate in the 44th John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Lihu'e, Kau'i. The torunament will take place Thursday through Saturday, February 20-22.
Head coach Jason Drotter had this to say about the OC Collegiate Classic: "I am very proud of our finish in the (tournament). It's always special to win your own event. On top of that, having the top two finishers in Derek and Jack makes it that much more special. Derek and Jack have had a great season, and have showed why they are two of the best players in our conference.
"Also, I am very proud of the three through five players (Garrett Boe, Matt Rafter, Trevor McNary) stepping up in the final round to help propel us to the win. Making up eight shots in the final 18 holes shows a level of toughness that we need coming down the stretch. My hope is that this is a sign of things to come."
The John A. Burns Intercollegiate is a three-day, 54-hole tournament which will take place on the par 72, 6,991-yard Wailua Golf Course. 18 holes will be played each day, with teams and individuals competing for championships.
Participating schools will include host Hawai'i, Arizona, Brigham Young, Cal, Cal State Fullerton, Grand Canyon, Illinois, Long Beach State, New Mexico, North Carolina, Northern Colorado, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, Texas A&M, UC Irvine, UNC Wilmington, UNLV, Utah, UTEP and Virginia.
"I am looking forward to competing this week in the Burns (tournament)," said coach Drotter, "It's a very strong field, certainly the best field of the year. Hopefully we can continue to play well and compete this week. Going to Hawai'i is always special for the guys, and a great experience."
Making the trip to the Aloha State will be Derek Castillo, Jack Dyer, Garrett Boe, Matt Rafter and Dalton Daniel. Dyer was a tri-medalist at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, and has had two top-ten finishes in '19-'20. Castillo won the OC Collegiate Classic, and has had two top-ten finishes this season.
