ELK GROVE, Calif.- The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team finished its first day of competition at the Sacramento State Invitational in 12th place at the Valley Hi Country Club on Monday.
The Titans recorded a first day tally of 614 (+38) after a first round 303 (+15) and second round 311 (+23). Fullerton trails host Sacramento State (-2, 574), Pacific (+5, 581), Chico State (+9, 585) Cal Poly (+16, 592) and Seattle (+17, 593) to round out the top five squads.
Fullerton freshman Mark Cobey and junior Nico Mendoza concluded their first 36-holes in 49th place after each carded a two-round score of 9-over 153, respectively. Cobey shot a first round 76 (+4) and second round 77 (+5) while leading the squad with six birdies. Mendoza, a transfer from Santiago Canyon College, turned in a team-best first round of 3-over 75 and followed that up with a 6-over 78.
Sacramento State's Robert Parden (-6, 138) headlines the field, while Pacific's Byron Meth (-4, 140) and another Hornet in Luke Kristo (-2, 142) are within six-strokes of the lead. Washington's Frank Garber (-1, 143) and Chico State's Lee Gearhart (even-par 144) round out the top five on the leaderboard.
Another pair of Titans recorded identical rounds and finishes after the first day of competition in Elk Grove, as senior Ryan Tetrault and sophomore Kyle De Silva posted first rounds of 4-over 76 and second rounds of 7-over 79 to card 36-hole totals of 11-over 155, respectively. CSF senior Josh Park rounded out the five-man team rotation with a first round 84 (+12) and second round 77 (+5) which was good for 86th position and a 36-hole mark of 17-over 161.
Competing as an individual was Fullerton's Marcus Mercado-Kiel, who turned in a first round 9-over 81 and second round 7-over 79. The Orange Coast College transfer carded a day one tally of 160 (+16) to place himself in a tie for 83rd.
The completion of the third and final 18-holes of the Sacramento State Invitational will wrap up tomorrow at the Valley Hi Country Club, a par-72, at 8 a.m.
