Titans in the Pros: Brown Makes MLB Debut

FULLERTON, Calif. – Former Cal State Fullerton star outfielder Gary Brown made his Major League Baseball debut for the San Francisco Giants Wednesday afternoon in a 9-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver, Colo.

Brown entered the game in the top of the seventh inning, leading off the frame as a pinch hitter. He flied out to left field and finished the game 0-for-1.

With his at-bat, Brown became the 55th former Titan to play in MLB and the second this season after former Fullerton infielder Christian Colon made his professional debut for the Kansas City Royals on July 1.

Brown is the 25th former Titans All-American to play in the Majors. In 2010, he was selected as a First-Team All-American by Baseball America, Yahoo! Sports and the American Baseball Coaches Association after he hit .438 in 50 games for the Titans. His batting average still ranks as the best single-season mark in Titans history.

He stole 32 bases that season and had 92 hits, 20 of them doubles. His eight triples in 2010 are also tied for the second most ever by a Titan in a single season. Brown would go on to become the 12th Fullerton player to be selected in the first round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft when the Giants took the Diamond Bar, Calif. native with the 24th overall pick.

In three years at Cal State Fullerton, Brown posted a career .357 batting average in 174 games, making 164 starts. The outfielder scored 173 runs and had 237 hits including 44 doubles, 17 triples and 14 home runs. He also stole 80 bases and had 108 RBI.

His 17 career triples rank second on the Titans all-time list while his 80 stolen bases rank fourth all-time. He still holds the freshman record for most stolen bases in a season when he swiped 25 in 2008.
