DURHAM, N.C. – Cal State Fullerton freshman right-hander Thomas Eshelman and junior two-way player Michael Lorenzen were named to Golden Spikes Award 60-man midseason watch list by USA Baseball on Thursday, bringing the organization one step closer to naming the top amateur baseball player in the country.
Eshelman has pitched in three combined shutouts this season, and in a staff-leading 76 and 2/3 innings on the mound, has struck out 50 while holding opposing batter to a staff-best .183 average.
In his first 63 and 1/3 innings as a collegiate pitcher, Eshelman did not issue a walk, a streak that fell just two innings short of Wes Roemer's program record of 65 and 1/3 innings in 2006. The main difference between the two streaks was that Eshelman plunked only two batters, while Roemer drilled 12.
In addition Eshelman leads the country in walks allowed per 9.0 innings pitched (0.12) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (50.0). Eshelman's mark of 5.87 hits allowed per 9.0 innings ranks 18th in the country.
Eshelman has also totaled nine quality starts in 2013.
Entering the week, Lorenzen's 13 saves top the Big West and are tied for fifth in the country.
In 15 appearances this season, Lorenzen has tossed 15 and 1/3 innings, striking out 12 and managing a 2.35 ERA while holding opposing batters to a .189 clip.
In addition, in both of his blown saves this season, Lorenzen has kept the Titans within reach to earn the win in both games.
At the plate, Lorenzen leads Cal State Fullerton or is tied for the lead in several offensive categories; batting average (.346; 7th Big West), slugging percentage (.562; 2nd Big West), hits (56; T-4th Big West), RBIs (40; 1st Big West), doubles (8) home runs (7; T-2nd Big West), and game-winning RBIs (7). His 13-game hitting streak from March 15-April 2 was the longest for any Titan this season, as Fullerton went 12-1 during that stretch while Lorenzen batted .469 with 19 RBIs, three doubles, three home runs and 13 runs scored.
On April 12, Lorenzen was denied his 17th consecutive save, but picked up the win in a 4-3 victory over UC Santa Barbara. The blown save ended his streak of 16 straight that dated back to May 1, 2012. Lorenzen's 29 career saves rank fourth all-time at Fullerton.
Lorenzen and Eshelman are the only representatives from the Big West Conference on the Golden Spikes watch list.
The Titans have produced three Golden Spikes winners in the program's history: Tim Wallach (1979), Phil Nevin (1992) and Mark Kotsay (1995).
The watch list will continue to be a "rolling" list until May 28 -- when the 30 semifinalists for the award are announced -- ensuring that athletes can play themselves into consideration for the award. The Golden Spikes Award trophy will be awarded live on MLB Network for the third year in a row, with a live presentation scheduled during The Rundown on Friday, July 19. Through USA Baseball's partnership with MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM), the presentation will also be simulcast with a live stream available from GoldenSpikesAward.com and USABaseball.com.
Twenty-nine new players were added to the list since its initial release on February 14, joining 31 others from the original watch list. The Southeastern Conference led all conferences in watch list players, placing 11 on the midseason update, while Georgia Tech and Louisiana State each placed three players on the list.
USA Baseball officials will announce the 30 semifinalists for the 2013 Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday, May 28. The list of 30 will then be sent to a voting body consisting of past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of media that closely follow the amateur game, select professional baseball personnel, and current USA Baseball staff, representing a group of more than 200 voters in total.
Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2013. Tuesday, May 28, marks the day when amateur baseball fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite semifinalist on GoldenSpikesAward.com. As part of this selection process all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of 30 names. On Tuesday, June 4, USA Baseball will announce the three finalists, and voting will once again commence that same day.
USA Baseball partnered with MLBAM to create GoldenSpikesAward.com in 2008. Later that year, Florida State's Buster Posey was presented the award at MLB All-Star FanFest in New York City. Stephen Strasburg of San Diego States won the award in 2009 in St. Louis, and Bryce Harper of Southern Nevada took home the trophy from Anaheim, Calif., in 2010. UCLA's Trevor Bauer was the 2011 winner and Florida's Mike Zunino won the 2012 award. Bauer and Zunino accepted their trophies as part of live presentations from MLB Network's Studio 42.

About the Golden Spikes Award
Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. Following the first-ever presentation of the Award to Bob Horner of Arizona State, the Golden Spikes Award has been presented each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship. The 2012 Golden Spikes Award winner was Mike Zunino of the University of Florida.
