LONG BEACH STATE: The Titans travel to Long Beach State this weekend to play a three-game series against the 49ers. This is a non-conference match-up between the Big West rivals, and will be followed by the Big West series, scheduled at Goodwin Field for May 3-5.
Coming off of a six-game skid, LBSU recently swept Wichita State last weekend at Blair Field. Shane Carle had a dominant performance last Friday, scattering three hits over seven innings, and giving the LBSU bats a chance to come alive late and grab a 4-1 win. Jake Stassi followed, also allowing just one run in seven innings in a 3-1 win to take the series on Saturday, and then the offense came through on Sunday, as six different players had hits and Long Beach State held on to take a 5-4 win and complete the sweep.
VERSUS LONG BEACH STATE: Cal State Fullerton's all-time Division I series record against Long Beach State dates back to 1975. The Titans hold a 124-60 all-time record against LBSU, including a 60-30 advantage in road games. Last year, the Titans' 2-1 series victory over Long Beach State to close the regular season clinched the Big West Conference title for the Titans.
Since 2001, the Titans and 49ers have played a three-game non-conference series on nine occasions (2001, '02, '03, '04, '05, '06, '07, '11, '12), with the Titans taking the series on seven occasions.
LOYOLA MARYMOUNT NOTES: Loyola Marymount (8-12, 1-2 West Coast Conference) is coming off a three-game series that saw the Lions drop two-of-three to cross-town rival Pepperdine to start West Coast Conference play. The Lions took the opener, 3-0, behind another solid pitching performance from sophomore Colin Welmon. The Waves evened the series at one game apiece on Saturday, scoring seven runs in the fourth inning en route to taking the game 11-1. LMU controlled the rubber game of the series on Sunday virtually the entire way, but a two-run ninth inning handed the Waves a walk-off 4-3 victory.
VERSUS LOYOLA MARYMOUNT: Cal State Fullerton holds a 68-25 record against the Lions. The Titans and LMU split the 2012 season series with each club picking up a win at home. On Feb. 29, the Titans defeated the Lions, 6-3, at Goodwin Field, while on April 24, LMU edged in CSF, 6-5, in Los Angeles.
TITAN CONNECTIONS: Jason Gill is in his fifth year at the helm of the LMU baseball program in 2013, having posted 30-win seasons in two of his first four years as head coach. For the four years preceding his start as LMU's seventh skipper in program history, Gill worked under head coach George Horton at Oregon and Cal State Fullerton, serving as an infield coach, recruiting coordinator and as a primary hitting instructor. In the three years preceding the move to Eugene, Ore., the Titans made it to Omaha and the College World Series twice (2006 & 2007), won two Big West Conference titles (2005 & 2006) and had 35 players drafted. The three-year stint under Horton was Gill's second on the Fullerton coaching staff, having started his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant for legendary skipper, and Division I baseball's all-time winningest coach, Augie Garrido. In that first term, Gill served essential roles on both the 1995 National Championship and 1996 Fullerton squads. Before embarking on his coaching career, Gill played one year (1994) at Cal State Fullerton, hitting .345, scoring 28 runs and starting 43 games at third base as a senior. That year, the All-Big West Conference infielder helped the Titans to a 47-16 overall record and a College World Series berth.
VERSUS THE WCC: The Titans are currently 1-1 against the WCC in 2013 with a 6-3 win over Pepperdine on Feb. 20, and a 7-3 loss at San Diego on March 5.
A JUMP IN THE RANKINGS: Cal State Fullerton entered the week at No. 8 in the Baseball America Top-25 poll.
OFF TO A HOT START: Currently with a record of 18-3, Fullerton's start is the best for the program since the 1996 squad opened the year 31-2. According to BoydsWorld.com, Fullerton's RPI entered this week at No. 9, while the Titans' strength of schedule rates at No. 6.
ROOKIE ARMS: Cal State Fullerton's 2.70 ERA currently is tied for second in the Big West Conference, A big part of the pitching staff's success is a pair of freshman right-handers in the weekend rotation, with Thomas Eshelman getting the nod on Friday nights, followed by Justin Garza (Saturday).
On Feb. 15, 2013, Eshelman (4-1, 1.29) became the first freshmen to start a season opener for the Titans since Feb. 5, 1987 when Mark Beck took the mound vs. Saint Mary's. Eshelman didn't disappoint the sellout crowd of 3,508 as CSF edged USC, 3-2 on Feb. 15. In the win, Eshelman allowed two unearned runs on four hits while striking out six in six innings of work.
Currently, Eshelman's ERA of 1.29 ranks third in the Big West Conference. In 35 innings pitched, the rookie from Carlsbad, Calif., has yet to issue a walk, while striking out 27. Eshelman's streak is the longest for Fullerton since Wes Roemer tossed 65 and 2/3 innings in 2006 without issuing a base on balls.
Garza (5-0, 0.99) has picked up wins over Nebraska, TCU, Oregon, Texas A&M and Oral Roberts during his five weeks on the mound. In 36 and 1/3 innings, Garza has surrendered just four earned runs, and his ERA of 0.99 tops the Big West Conference. In addition, Garza is holding opposing batters to a .169 clip, another mark that leads the conference. Garza is the first Titan freshman since Dylan Floro in 2010 to win five straight starts. Floro won five straight starting April 30 at Pacific, followed by May 9 vs. UC Riverside, May 16 at Long Beach State, May 23 vs. Santa Clara and May 28 vs. Cal State Northridge. Garza is also one of just 14 pitchers in the country with a record of 5-0 or better.
FREE RIDE: Cal State Fullerton entered the week leading the country allowing just 1.54 walks per 9.0 innings pitched. In addition, the Titans 5.0 strike-to-walk ratio ranks second in the country.
AT THE PLATE: Entering the 2013 season, Cal State Fullerton had 15 position players from a year ago returning to the roster, including six starters. That wealth of experience has helped the Titans to its No. 8 ranking and 18-3 record. Fullerton's offense currently leads the Big West or is tied for the lead in the following offensive categories: on-base percentage (.390), runs scored (130), RBIs (118), walks (101), hit-by-pitch (38), stolen bases (31).
EARLY AND OFTEN: A key ingredient to Fullerton's success has been the club's ability to score early and often. Cal State Fullerton has outscored opponents in 21-5 in the first inning in 2013, and Fullerton has outscored opponents 49-14 in the first three innings of games this year. In addition, the Titans have not lost a game in which they have obtained the lead.
OVER THE FENCES: In 2012, the Titans totaled just 10 home runs. After just five weeks in 2013, Fullerton has already surpassed that total, hitting 11 round trippers. Senior Anthony Hutting leads the Titans with three home runs followed by J.D. Davis (2), Michael Lorenzen (2), Jake Jefferies (1), Austin Kingsolver (1), Carlos Lopez (1) and Richy Pedroza (1).
GOOD FOR EXTRAS: Michael Lorenzen's .544 slugging percentage currently ranks fifth in the Big West and leads Fullerton. The Titans' starting center fielder is batting .329 with a team-leading 10 extra-base hits: five doubles, three triples and two home runs. As a team, the Titans have totaled 46 extra-base hits: 24 doubles, 11 triples and 11 home runs.
MAKING THE TOP-30: Senior first baseman Carlos Lopez was one of 30 NCAA® baseball student-athletes selected as candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate baseball, it was announced on Feb. 27.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
NICK HURTADO: The Cal State Fullerton baseball program is mourning the loss of teammate Nick Hurtado, who passed away at the age of 21 after a battle with cancer on March 1.
Hurtado, a 2010 graduate of Corona Santiago High School in Corona, Calif., committed the Titans as a senior in the fall of 2009, before his battle with bone cancer began.
Hurtado was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Ty DeTrinidad and the Sharks. Before his senior season began, Hurtado was diagnosed with cancer after being hit by a ball in the knee during the preseason. On March 5, 2010, he made his only appearance of his senior season at Corona Santiago, tossing one pitch (a strike) in the opening game of the 2010 season just days before his treatment was to begin.
The pitcher was finally able to join the Titans for the 2012 season, but sat out the year as his treatment and recovery continued. Due to his illness, he was unable to join the roster in 2013, but made the effort to connect with his teammates at Goodwin Field as often as possible.
Statement from the 2013 Titans
"The world lost and amazing person last night. We will forever remember his genuine love for the people around him, and for life itself. He will be in our hearts every single day."

I head coach, won his first Big West crown in 2012, following in the footsteps of his predecessors, Augie Garrido (14 conference championships), Larry Cochell (1), George Horton (7) and Dave Serrano (3).
A further breakdown has the Titans winning three PCAA conference championships (1975-76, 1987), eight straight SCBA titles (1977-84) and 15 while playing under the Big West name (1990-91, 94-95, 1997, 1999-2001, 2004-06, 2008, 2010-12).
